Why Pope Leo Is Going to Lourdes Right Now — 7 Things to Watch

📚 Free eBooks: https://buymeacoffee.com/totuscatholi... ☕ Support This Mission: https://buymeacoffee.com/totuscatholica When Pope Leo XIV lands in Lourdes on Saturday evening, he will do something no pope has done in 18 years, and almost every stop on the official schedule sits on top of a fault line. A nation that just legalized assisted dying. A basilica whose famous mosaics had to be covered because of an abuse scandal. A pope about to speak, or deliberately stay silent, at the exact moment it matters most. Most people will see ceremony, candles, and nice photographs. Here are the seven things every Catholic should actually watch. The context is everything. France calls itself the eldest daughter of the Church, yet wrote abortion into its constitution in 2024 and gave final approval to assisted dying this past July. Baptisms have collapsed from over half a million a year in 1980 to roughly 200,000 today. And yet, the part nobody predicted, more than 13,000 adults were baptized in France this past Easter, a number that has tripled in a decade, many of them young and hungry for the ancient faith. Into that country steps a pope under a motto the French bishops chose with his blessing: that the world may have life. That is not a tourism slogan. It is a provocation. And on Sunday night, when tens of thousands of candles move through the darkness, remember: the spring still flows, the sick still come first, and once again Peter is kneeling at the grotto. In this video: • Why the grotto at 7:40 Saturday night matters more than two days of Paris speeches • The covered mosaics: a basilica facade hidden with Rome's explicit agreement • The chess move: the same sentence is a political speech in Paris and a pastor's word in Lourdes • The meeting with no cameras: the French bishops behind closed doors Sunday at 9 • 150,000 pilgrims, tens of thousands of candles, and a pope holding one himself ⏱ CHAPTERS 0:00 The Fault Lines Under This Trip 1:09 France: Collapsing and Reviving at Once 3:00 Why His First Stop Is the Grotto 4:01 The Covered Mosaics (The Rupnik Trial) 5:24 Seven Survivors, Announced in Advance 6:15 The Life Message: Paris vs. Lourdes 9:19 The Torchlight Rosary and the Road to Metz 📖 SCRIPTURE REFERENCED • John 10;10: that the world may have life, the motto landing in a country that just voted on who gets to live and who gets to die. ⛪ FROM THE CATECHISM • CCC 2691: a pilgrimage evokes our earthly journey toward heaven. That is what you are really watching this weekend, not a state visit, a pilgrimage with the whole world peering over one pilgrim's shoulder. • The Church's teaching on life: to be defended from conception until natural death, and ordinary care like food and water is never optional. 📜 SOURCES & FURTHER READING • The schedule: Leo lands at Lourdes Saturday at 7:05pm, and his first act is not an address but prayer at the grotto of Massabielle at 7:40, coming, the sanctuary says, as a pilgrim among pilgrims. • The covered facade: the mosaics of Fr. Marko Rupnik, on trial at the Vatican, accused, not convicted, were covered indefinitely by Bishop Jean-Marc Micas with Rome's explicit agreement, including during this visit. • The survivor meeting: announced in advance by the Vatican, seven survivors of clergy abuse, including one person abused as an adult. • The precedent: in 2004, an ailing John Paul II used his last foreign trip, Lourdes, to deliver a forceful condemnation of abortion and euthanasia. • The close: Monday in Metz, the adopted home of Robert Schuman, the devout Catholic who dreamed up a united Europe, declared venerable by Pope Francis in 2021. 🔗 EXPLORE MORE 🌍 Website: https://totuscatholica.org/ Rosary Guide: https://totuscatholica.org/rosary ✉️ Contact: https://totuscatholica.org/contact 🔍 Examination of Conscience: https://catholicexaminationofconscien... 👥 Become a Totus Insider: https://buymeacoffee.com/totuscatholi...
