Japanese add vowel and consonant sounds to replace sounds that aren’t present in their language, to make them sound like japanese syllables. This does not really help them with foreign languages. Spanish uses a lot of diphthongs, japanese uses no diphthongs. Puerto is a 2 syllable word in spanish, but a japanese speaker would pronounce it as four pu/e/ru/to, because the ue diphthong from spanish does not exist in japanese. And there is an added u after the r because consonant clusters like rt, st, ng, also don’t occur in japanese. And since there is (almost) always a vowel at the end of a japanese syllable, they add a u.
