In Sword/Shield if you go online and head to the wild area, you'll still find people out and about.
Especially around the daycare.

I did a lot of Wonder Trades in X/Y before it shut down. I bred and sent out a few hundred Protean Froakies. I mostly received Wurmple, Zigzagoon, Magikarp, and Ralts, and occasionally a hacked shiny legend.
The cool thing is that I get a prize every day at the Loto-ID place in Lumiose City now.

Sword and Shield ranked are actually decently populated if you know when to look. I’ve been playing SwSh ranked for almost 2 years now. If you look around 1 am est you’ll get a some Japanese players and every Saturday there’s an event called Galar Fight Night where a bunch of people get together to play ranked for 6 hours. I’m actually surprised you didn’t find anyone in casuals cause you can usually find at least one person in casuals even outside of the 1 est time

It's weird to hear you say older games and talk about switch games, while here I am having recently played B/W, B/W2, and am currently playing ORAS.

in my experience, SWSH is not exactly dead, but its more so used a lot by streamers to shiny hunt/interact with their viewers. I personally know 3 of my streamer friends still do dynamax adventures from time to time.
