Literally walking out of the theater right now. Never thought a movie would make me laugh and scream so much at once.

My hot take might be that I like how it ends. I love when characters don’t have plot armor.

I have to agree about how the humor and tension go hand in hand. One scene in particular has him with another character that provides a moment of comedic relief and then as soon as they separate the tension returned. It was so seamless and immediate I was so impressed by it. Loved this movie so much!

As a non-gamer whose only knowledge about the franchise is Daddy Leon Kennedy, Mommy Ada Wong and the 2000s movies, this movie took me by surprise. I was expecting more horror and less corny and comedic tone. But I shockingly learned that the tone of the game is not that different.

Spoiler Alert: For those who saw the movie and don't know. What the protagonist of movie first encountered, was the G-virus. Thats the virus that mutates. It'll mutate even faster as the host takes damage.

The only time you see the T-virus:

When Maxine got out of the car to save the woman running from the zombies. She shot those zombies dead with head shots.

The zombies that were on the roof of buildings that were mindless falling off to get to the protagonist.

This movie focused on the protagonist's (Bryan) hopeless chance against the G-virus. The cure at the end was never going to save him. The cure was for the T-virus.

This is a resident evil movie that aimed to make the viewers feel hopelessness, and then breaks your heart at the end. Very good movie

My honest Long review to the movie with SPOILERS!

I’ve now watched Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil twice, and I have to say: despite all my criticism, this is actually the third-best Resident Evil movie for me. It still can’t beat Resident Evil (2002) and Resident Evil: Apocalypse for me. Yes, both of those movies are objectively far from perfect, but they have something Cregger’s movie is mostly missing: genuine Resident Evil feeling. You can recognize what things are supposed to be, the world feels like the games, and you can clearly see that a lot of thought was put into adapting familiar elements, characters, locations and designs. Alice is still a bit of a thorn in my side, though.

Up until around the end of the tunnel scene, I actually thought Cregger’s movie was almost consistently great. The visuals, atmosphere, music and direction are sometimes genuinely excellent. You can immediately tell that Zach Cregger has a very good eye for striking visuals and interesting horror moments. Even though I still don’t really understand why the infection was able to spread beyond Raccoon City so quickly, or why the whole thing feels more like an extremely over-the-top Las Plagas virus, the movie works really well as a horror film up to that point.

My biggest problem, however, is that at some point the movie barely feels like Resident Evil anymore. Some of the mutations are way too freaky for me and feel more like Evil Dead, Dead Space or other horror movies than the classic B.O.W.s from Resident Evil. And unfortunately, a lot is lost because of that. What I’m really missing are the normal zombies. I think it would have worked much better if there had simply been a lot more classic undead first, with the truly grotesque mutations only coming later as an escalation. To me, Resident Evil should build from normal zombies, to recognizable B.O.W.s, and then eventually to bigger and more fucked-up enemies.

Raccoon City itself is also a huge problem for me. The city feels incredibly lifeless and has almost no recognizable identity. You rarely get the feeling that an entire American city is currently collapsing into chaos. Instead, at times it just feels like some random European city where zombies and mutations happen to be running around. The architecture especially stands out to me and just doesn’t look American at all. If you didn’t know the movie was set in Raccoon City, you probably wouldn’t be able to tell from the city itself.

On top of that, Umbrella is barely present. There’s no real Umbrella atmosphere, barely any major Easter eggs, and very little that makes you think, “Okay, this is definitely Resident Evil.” There are a few small references, but that’s not enough for me. Even a few Umbrella or R.P.D. logos on buildings, vehicles or equipment would have helped enormously. Those little details are what make the world feel authentic to me.

It also feels like the entire catastrophe is happening almost exclusively around Bryan. Raccoon City doesn’t feel like a city that is collapsing; it feels more like a backdrop Bryan moves through from one situation to the next while the rest of the city is simply asleep. There are barely any crowds, zombies in the streets, police, military, vehicles, chaos, or anything else that makes it feel like a full scale outbreak is actually happening. And that’s exactly what the movie is missing: that big Resident Evil feeling.

After the tunnel scene, things unfortunately keep getting worse for me. I actually really liked the basic idea behind the girl in the RV, but I didn’t like the execution. Why does she have to turn into yet another completely insane creature? I think it would have been much stronger if she had simply been a normal zombie girl who was in the middle of turning, constantly switching back and forth between her human and zombie state. That would have been much creepier to me and also much closer to Resident Evil.

The characters also started annoying me more and more. Why does everyone in this movie have to be so completely incompetent? The Umbrella guy doesn’t seem particularly competent, the other character is constantly trying way too hard to act cool, and even people who are supposed to be well-trained soldiers make decisions that simply don’t make sense. And then you get some stupid one-liner every two minutes. A little humor is completely fine and can even work really well, but here it eventually becomes too much for me and starts ruining the atmosphere.

And then there’s the ending. I actually like the idea of Bryan mutating. I don’t need a happy ending, and I think it can be interesting when a Resident Evil movie ends on a darker note. But the sudden cut in the middle of the scene simply did not work for me. It doesn’t feel like a deliberate cliffhanger; it almost feels like the movie ran out of ideas or money right before the end. Especially because the movie was so strong earlier on, the ending is incredibly disappointing.

And that’s where I also see a general problem with Zach Cregger. With Barbarian, Weapons and now Resident Evil, I feel like he can come up with incredibly strong ideas, visuals and individual moments, and his movies often remain really interesting for half or even three quarters of their runtime. But at some point he seems to lose control of his own story, and the final parts of his movies feel noticeably weaker. With Resident Evil, it unfortunately ends up almost becoming trash at times although, to be fair, it’s trash that looks fucking amazing.

And that is ultimately what frustrates me most about this movie. In my opinion, Cregger already had the golden trophy in his hands. He can create atmosphere, horror, striking visuals and interesting creatures, and he had almost everything he needed to make a really great Resident Evil movie. But the one thing that matters most to me is exactly what he failed to consistently deliver: Resident Evil itself.

If the movie had a different title and you removed the little Easter eggs, you probably wouldn’t even recognize that it was supposed to be a Resident Evil movie. At times, it feels more like Dead Space on Earth or a Zach Cregger horror movie that simply had a few Resident Evil elements added to it.

That’s why I’m ultimately giving it a 6.0/10, and honestly, it only gets those six points because I still found the movie genuinely entertaining and thought the first two-thirds were sometimes really strong. I’m still glad the movie exists, though, because maybe it will get more people interested in Resident Evil again and eventually lead to new movies or series that actually make better use of the potential of the games.

Because honestly, I don’t even need a perfect Hollywood movie. I just want to see a Resident Evil movie again where, after five minutes, I can sit there and think:

“YES. THIS is Resident Evil.”

PS: Capcom already showed with the short Resident Evil Requiem teaser how Resident Evil should look and feel to me. Raccoon City, the atmosphere, the zombies, the entire world — you immediately recognize what you’re looking at. If Zach Cregger’s movie had combined that DNA with his incredible direction, visuals and atmosphere, it probably would have been the best Resident Evil movie of all time for me. And that’s exactly why it’s so frustrating: he basically had the golden trophy already in his hands.

24:43 SPOILERS BE WARNED!!! I wanna give my two cents as someone whos played or watched playthroughs of almost every game. Resi lore is famously very convoluted and silly at points though, so take what I say with a grain of salt, im not a lore expert.

1- Fat guy in the sewers is likely in reference to how many RE games have sewer segments featuring big tanky enemies who oftentimes explode when you finally pump enough ammo into them.

2- The zombies are probably pointing at the nearest uninfected, but I personally think this is more a directing choice than lore. It gives them that arms outstreched shambling with something more unique, that being the pointing.

3- The health sprays arent given much explanation in game unfortunately 😅 they are just magic healing items basically. The only games that actually address it being 7 and 8, and the protag of those games can heal so well with them because hes been infected with a special strain of virus that acts as a mold stitching his body back together, even after getting his limbs hacked off.

4- The reason the roof zombies fully die is basically how many of them die in game. They have to be so obliterabed physically they cant come back to life. Why the rats do come back to life in this movie then im not 100% sure, but in game most enemies you gotta double tap or they can be downed, but not fully killed.

5- Ceiling Blood Nurses where probably less physically altered for two reasons. One, the older someone is they less quickly infection seems to take hold but also mutate. Babies in the series infected are often privy to special powers from their body growing with the infection. Two, probably just because the hospitals always have the basic zombies with more evolved boss zombies in specific sections.

6- I do agree this movie wouldnt have hurt from character cameos, but im not bothered at all from the departure from fan favorites characters. My fav games are 7 and 8 for being seperate but related stories to the mainly and my entry to the series. If you really loved the movie, highly recommend those games as they are probably most similar in tone to the movie.

Im really happy to see non-RE fans enjoy this movie so much, I hope it encourages more fans of these wonderfully scary, goofy, and sometimes poignant games.

25:00 if you hack resident evil outbreak (first game) there's an enemy called Unknown(unidentified in JP) which is an Enemy that looks exactly like this. The only changes are he's pink in color and his body parts seemingly got stitched together and around 12 feet tall. In fact there's a YouTube video about cut enemy contents. Go check it out. Cregger getting lucky with his enemy designs. Sucks he's not aware of the Nyx Enemy and it's body absorption capability.

26:05 SPOILERS?

the healing sprays, i think, are a blend of healing herbs that Umbrella sells as a sort of quick, miracle wound healer, which as you mentioned, also looks to numb the pain as seen from the characters perking back up to full health after using it. i could be wrong, but i remember reading something along those lines in the first game.
