I had to do this 14 yr ago. I fired him not because the funds lost money, but because when I called asking about why this happened, he didn't even know it had occurred! I was the one who told him about an overall loss of 7%.

I've been self educated in finances since then, and became a self directed long term value investor. My average return now is about 15-20% across all holdings. 🎉

Wow, 19 ETFs! I would start with a conversation with your advisor and share your concerns and recommend something so much more simple (like 60% VTI and 30% VBTLX and 10% cash), and negotiate a reduced annual fee because you don’t need that many ETFs. This gives you their occasional advice from the advisor without a complicated plan. Or drop your advisor go with a simple asset allocation and watch more Rob. Good luck!

TIPS have a “real” yield which lower than treasuries because they adjust for inflation. They do not however have a lower total return because they mature at par plus whatever inflation was since issuance. TIPS will outperform nominal treasuries if inflation comes in higher than expected when you buy them (as implied by the breakeven rate) and underperform otherwise.

Excellent info. Can you do a video instructing us after how you would actually operationalize the de-accumulation. I have the same software you are referring to, and I can see every column which account supposed to draw money from on a yearly basis for some reason I get paralyzed looking at how to actually do this.

I use a financial advisor for diversity such as owning corporate bonds , annuities, doing covered calls on individual stocks , buying and selling individial stocks for the short term ( like this year) and the long term, buying options .... Things that take a lot of time and knowledge to do on your own.

I have been a CFP since 1986 and would never insult a person to say they should never DIY-they don’t need me to invest their $. A good CFP/advisor will always be more than a product pusher and for those who have never dealt with a complex portfolio @ death, having an advisor is a real plus to assist with the distribution and at times crazy paperwork. In my case, I do not charge fees to do this … it was ethical commitment to my deceased client often times doing many hours of work to assist moving the assets to other family. In short, there are good advisors that are worth hiring as a financial partner if they are cost conscious and not commission driven
