The real question is, how did a 22 year old write such a beautiful song with lyrics that still hit so hard now, 60 years later?

I had an English Literature professor in college that said this is one of the most perfect poems ever written.

It’s virtually impossible for the Beatles to be “overrated”, and anyone that says that is ignorant of just how important they are to music history, and how much they drastically changed EVERYTHING. 100% of the time, I guarantee if a person says that about them, whoever that person’s favorite band is was deeply inspired by them.

David Gilmour said : The Beatles weren't a band. They were a miracle.

Anyone that thinks The Beatles are overated is not aware of how much musical ground they covered in a 7 yr period. To go from Love Me Do to Sgt. Pepper in that short amount of time is crazy.

"Yesterday" is the most covered song of the rock music era, and deservedly so. Paul has said that he wrote it not about a romantic partner, but about his mother (Mary) who died of breast cancer when Paul was 14. He said that years after he wrote the song, saying that it was probably a subconscious thing.

At the point "Yesterday" came out in 1965, the Beatles were generally thought to be just another flash-in-the-pan teen heartthrob band, with no lasting power. Once "Yesterday" came out (and boosted by the critical success of the Beatles' film "A Hard Day's Night), serious music people just started to see that the Beatles had the chops to be something more than just another teen band. The next couple of years hammered that idea down -- the Beatles turned rock music on its head, and in the process turned rock music into a serious art form that was worthy of study. That is perhaps the most powerful legacy of the Beatles.
