90% of the guards in Shawshank weren't even born when Brooks came in.

Him feeding the birds hoping his old friend Jake turns up is the saddest part

Brooks was in jail so long he missed both world wars, and the advancement of technology like cars. It must've felt like stepping into an alien planet for him when he left Shawshank.

I love that line, "The world went and got itself in a big damn hurry"

He packed up his belongings at the very end. 50 years of institutional routine 😢

Brooks was in jail from either 1905/1909 until 1955. You can imagine how much he'd feel like a stranger and an outcast.

Characters like Brooks are such a double edge sword. We are introduced to him and his nice and soft demeanor and grow a liking for him, but we are never truly introduced to how he got to prison. He murdered his Wife and Daughter over some gambling debts. This scene always made me cry, even with the knowledge of what he has done. That is what is called superb storytelling!

I genuinely felt Brooks' pain in his cries. Brilliant acting by James Whitmore here, and one of the best performances in a film by an elderly gentleman I've ever seen. I wonder how difficult it is for an elderly person to have to play existential roles in film...

I always felt this part with Brooks would have also worked as a short film on its own

I know it's been talked about many, many times before, but I love the stark contrast between Brooks and Red when they are paroled. The prison is visible behind Brooks, showing that's all he knows and all he has, without it he won't be around much longer. Whereas Red has wide open spaces in front of him, signifying he has something to look forwards to, a future maybe worth living for.

One of the saddest scenes. No rehabilitation. No reintegration.
