I suspect at the end of the day we will go "fake manual is better than no manual", but this might really kill off true manuals for good (or come close to it).

"Porsche's hybrid system has a motor in the PDK transmission. How do you make that play nice with a manual?"

They way Porsche implemented their T-Hybrid in the 911 GTS could no doubt be made to work with a traditional clutch pedal on a traditional single-clutch manual transmission. Oh sure, control schema for the hybrid motor would have to be specific to the implementation, its physical dimensions would have to be changed to suit, etc. But it's certainly doable. They've already got clutch pedal sensors from which the computers can get position and calculate travel rate fast enough to make a rev-matching system work. Just need to map that data, along with the same data from the throttle pedal sensors, to the motor's demanded output in a way that makes everything operate smoothly...and of course make physical changes to accommodate whatever dimensional constraints might be different. I can't think of any reason they couldn't do this easily, other than some packaging limitations I'm unaware of. After all, the Vonnen Shadow Drive (a 3rd party aftermarket hybrid system for manual 911s) exists and is said to work reasonably well, without even tying into the car's ECU at all. Certainly Porsche could make some variation of this concept work without too much trouble.

Making it work "by-wire" on a PDK is certainly just as doable. This is the "simulated manual" choice that you're talking about. Maybe they're looking at this option more seriously for cost reasons, since they've already got the main componentry working and only need to figure out the by-wire pedal and shifter lever bits. IF IF IF the simulated manual can be made to function seamlessly--such that a driver would be unaware without being told--then I don't see what the negative fuss is about this choice. Who cares HOW it works, as long as it works well enough to operate just the same and fool the driver? I think this is kind of analogous to the Ionic 5N fakery. It was laughed at, but then many reviewers admitted the fakery was done well enough that they liked it just fine anyway. At some point, the intellectual knowledge that it's fakery just doesn't matter any more.

Whether or not Porsche can reach that point any time soon, and whether or not they even want to, are different questions altogether.

I always felt like GMs hybrid system they used in the Volt was something that should have been adopted by more manufacturers. Good to see Nissan pick up the torch and keep it going.

I won't be able to be there for Watkins Glen thanks to some other plans, but I'll keep an eye out for the next one!
