I think people missed that taking Maomao guaranteed Lakan would crash out. Suirei was counting on it, its why she wanted to keep her in the village and treat her well. If Maomao hadn't snuck out with Kou-u, they wouldn't have brought her to the stronghold.

Maomao has the pieces of the puzzle to put together that Jinshi is the crown prince, but she refuses to put those pieces together because knowing that information with her status will only put a target on her back.

5:19 No, Loulan and Suirei brought Maomao along to the Fox Village specifically in order to force both Lakan and Jinshi to go after her and attack the Shi. It was never intended for her to get to the Stronghold itself, she was supposed to safely chill at the village inn, never seen by Shenmei.
9:17 It's not that Maomao did not piece it together. She essentially did it back in S1 ep. 11. The thing is that she was absolutely intentionally denying the reality as hard as she could because a secret of this level is not something she has any wish to keep or be associated with.

Maomao knew that Jinshi was the crown prince, but didn't want to face it. It's self presservation. Early in the story when Maomao found out the face powder was poison, all the face powder was conficated. Because Lihua's attendant hid some, the random eunich that conficated the face powder, got whiped because he didn't get all of it. Also when Xiolan causes the ice to break, she and the eunich are afraid they will be beaten. So Maomao admitting to herself that Jinshi is the crown prince could be dangerous.

From reading the light novels, the author loves Chekov’s guns. If anything, she got an entire armory of Checkov’s finest, ready to use as she wishes

Just a note: the eunuchs in apothecary diaries don't have ANYTHING down there. It's not just the balls, they take everything out (that's why suirei was able to sneak in. If they were expecting post but no bells, they'd have noticed she didn't fit in) it reflects how they did it in imperial china

Um, yeah, it's already been hinted at that Jinshi isn't the PDF previous Emperor's son. He's the current Emperor's son. Ah Duo is his mom. They hinted at it when Maomao mentioned the baby swapping between Anshi and Ah Duo. Natsu Hyuga has confirmed this.

Its not that Maomao hasn't figured Jinshi out. She desperately wants to stay safe above all else and knowing Jinshi's secret is extremely dangerous information.

I totally agree that at its core this show is a romance. I'm loving the slow burn.

I swear I needed like a flowchart for the Loulan plotline but goddamn what a compelling storyline. That whole family is wild.

Btw, it’s possibly shown that it wasn’t Jinshi’s father that went after young girls, but his grandfather and all because the original empress basically groomed him to be like that. Jinshi’s father is the current emperor, but is being considered his brother due to the emperor looking young despite being in his late thirties and Jinshi being 19-20 years old. There’s still so much mystery within the royal bloodline
