This is the reason that when I had my A/C replaced in 2020 and was getting estimates I specifically told them I didn't want variable speed anything. I want it to be either full on or full off, nothing in between. My other two requirements were no micro-channel coils and no LG compressors. The simpler it is the less likely it is to fail. Luckily I live in New England so I can have a simple 13 seer unit with no bells and whistles.

I hate high efficiency motors , as you stated they end up costing more in the long run. The brand new 120k 80% gas furnace I have saved for my house still uses a PSC blower. No ECMs for me! 😁 I own two hub pullers too. Lost my first, ordered another a short time later, then I found the missing puller. Put motor oil on the threads and end of the screw that pushes against the motor shaft. It will work smoother and help prevent stripping the puller out.
