Fun Fact : One half of the Fairlight Synth (Peter Vogel) who lived just up the road from me (Blue Mtns) also invented the 'Vitalcall', the pendant around your neck that you press if you fall over (Think = I've fallen and i can't get up) after a relative had fallen and couldn't get to the phone.

Amiga 500 home computer (and 1985 pricy early version) Brought four-channel sample-based-mudic to the nerds.

This is great. I remember the Fairlight, so advance for the time. Kate Bush was my first introduction..

8:24 And you didn't even mention that they effectively invented tracker software. There're still software tools to this day that handle composition in basically the same way as the Fairlight. I'm always stunned at just how far ahead of its time this thing was.

Also, now I'm going to have 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' stuck in my head all day. Oh well, there's worse things.

Technological restrictions create art - A Guy Called Gerald's 1988 banger Voodoo Ray is only called that because the vocal that gives the song it's title is part of a line from a Peter Cook and Dudley Moore Derek & Clive routine where Cook says 'Voodoo rage' but because of memory limitations Simpson couldn't get the whole line.

I think Peter Zinovieff has a better claim to the invention of digital sampling; he was doing it with a DEC PDP-8/s, an early minicomputer, in the 1960s. That said, Fairlight was certainly the first to successfully commercialize it.

Ah, the mighty Fairlight! I have quite a love for these old beasts! 💖💖
Back around 2019, I briefly collaborated with Peter Wielk of Horizontal Productions in Sydney. He was product specialist for the original Fairlight team, and he is currently restoring Fairlight systems. I had his Fairlight CMI III test system in my studio for a while and used it on some of my albums, including my two most recent ones.

Fun fact, most of the score for Terminator 2 was created using a Fairlight.

Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream always used sampling in their music. They’d create a bit, then sample it multiple times using a sequencer and synthesizer to create a steady tune or melody or rhythm so that they didn’t need to just repeat the same notes on a keyboard sometimes for hours at a time. It was a time-saver as much as a creative tool…

Yep, quintessentially Aussie thing to do.
Day one: "Mate we need a synth but can't afford one". "She'll be right- we'll just knock one up! How hard can it be...?"
Day five: "Mate that's not a synth". "Nah but it's fcking AWESOME!"
