It should be mentioned that each of the 8 sould gems acts as a phylactery should the lich be dedstroyed. This means if you kill the lich and destroy the phylactery but leave even one of these 120,000GP gems intact then the demilich regenerates 1d10 days later just as if the phylactery was still intact.

watch carefully what goes into the rogue's pocket at the end of the fight.

There is no such thing as a good aligned lich. Becoming a lich is a soul corrupting evil process. There are “good intentioned” liches, but we all know where good intentions lead. And besides, they still need to consume souls to remain animated, which is an evil act.

Anarchocles "glory to the lawless" is the archaic object name of the original human whose skull became the demilich most commonly referred to as the wand of Orcus. This well known magical artifact is much more than a mere magic wand. A pc Touching the artifact is at best instantly under complete physicaland mechanical control of anarchocles. They are possessed and might attack allies present, or self inflicted death or have a stroke or simply brutally pop like an infected boil throwing rot grubs in all directions. Have fun! It is rumored that Anarchcles has a curious obsession with the Herald of Atropus.

I think I have an idea why demi-liches are a lower rating. The lich is distracted, either because it has gone insane due to soul hunger or because it is performing something far more important on another plane. So either the party is, relatively speaking, gotten lucky or can expect the lich to be rather cross when it can spare the time to track them down. In the latter the random bone is little more than a vehicle for the lich to keep an eye on one of its old laboratories. Perhaps the very technique Vecna used that allowed for his various spare parts to possess his godly power.

I firmly believe WoTc should be on their hands and knees, thanking Ernest Cline. You can't convince that he didn't near single handedly revitalize and bring the tomb of horrors, back into the realms, and did a good amount bringing DnD as a whole back with it

How about having a Demilich as the head of a giant Iron Golem.

I'll bet a skilled and creative enough demilich would likely have an undead shambling mound of sorts.

As for spells known to the Demi Lich? Why not give them access to lost magic, Spells from 4th edition, 3rd edition, 2nd edition, and 1st edition. Have them function as listed. If there is no equivalent saving throw, Use the Lich/Demilich's CR + 10.

Wouldn’t it be hilarious if Simple Jack from Tropic Thunder was turned into a dummy lich?
