Gabby Johnson is based on Gabby Hayes an actor in many American Westerns. Hedy Lamarr was a Hollywood actress. She actually sued the production company because the movie was making a joke of her name. The Chief is speaking Yiddish. In the later 1800s there was a popular racial theory that Native Americans were the lost tribe of Israel. Lily is based on the actress Marlene Dietrich. Randolph Scott was a famous actor who starred in many Westerns. Howard Johnson's was a well-known (now defunct) chain of restaurants. Van Johnson was a Hollywood actor. Olsen Johnson was based on a two-man comedy act, Olsen and Johnson. Dr Samuel Johnson was a mid-1700s' literary figure famous for compiling a dictionary of the English language.

There was actually a method to the madness at the end of the movie. What Mel Brooks originally wanted to do was a satire on racism set in the present day but no studio would finance such a film. Warner Brothers told him he could do a satire on racism but it would have to be set in the past. Brooks used that overhead crane shot to reveal the Warner Brothers studios as a way to move the film into present time which is where he wanted the setting of the film to be in the first place.

The name of Hedly Lamarr is a running gag because there was a famous actress in the 1940s named Hedy Lamarr. Hedy was was called "the most beautiful woman in the world," and it turns out that she was also a brilliant inventor who helped the Allied war effort during World War 2. She helped invent technology that is still used in Bluetooth and GPS communications. She wasn't amused by the "Hedly" gag and threatened to sue, but they settled out of court.

Lili Von Shtüpp's "I'm So Tired" song was a parody of the actress Marlene Dietrich.

Chinese immigrants played a huge role in building the railroads in the western part of America. They are referenced a couple of times in the movie, but their history is not often discussed.

The Sioux chief who lets Bart's family pass is speaking Yiddish.

The theme song is sung by Frankie Laine who sang many well known western theme songs. Brooks posted for someone to sing it and Laine applied. He didn't tell him it was a comedy to get him to sing it seriously.

Kids this is really just a live action cartoon! It lampoons racism and racist morons. Mel Brooks is Jewish and fights racism by mocking it. Very funny!
