I'm a mechanic and deal with it every day. Good video and correct in all respects. It's a shitshow now, I miss the older cars!

This is a corporate capture of the entire industry through servicing, repairs and components.

Some modern cars need a replacement headlight to be software coded to the cars computer. Bring back simplicity.

As a 77 year old, I grew up in a time when buying your first car, you could easily repair the motor and drive chain with parts ready available at home. There were no electronic controls, diagnostic modules and very few sensors. The radio was a transitor sitting on the dash board. You only had a heater and no air conditioner. You wound your window down buy hand. Your first cars were a right of passage into adulthood. Modern cars are a nightmare even for specialist mechanics. I have 4 cars, 3 of them over 20 years old which still run perfectly without any faults. The more modern one is 10 years old and mechanically is perfect but the passenger side window switch does not work and the boot lid does not open completly automatically. Repair of these are so expensive that it is not worth it and better to put up with.

The DSG example about future hesitation, jerking etc issues is so true. It’s the same for example with the ZF6HP series gearboxes. Mechatronic repairs equals relearn required which can produce a lot of notation shifting issues until it relearns and settles. Mechanics and transmission specialists knocked mine back. Quotes hovered around the $5k plus mark. Ended up doing it myself.

Time to drain the Aussie swamp! You buy the car outright. You should have access to the any mechanic and they should have free access to servicing and repair data. Thanks for sharing this information

Retired machinery & truck builder/mechanic here, I'd also keep the company fleet of 80's Subaru service ute's & the truck drivers that we gave company ute's to running like a Swiss watch, the cost of keeping these on the road was very little $$.
What's happening in this content is nothing new, newer vehicles including trucks have had built in redundancy engineered into them since the 90's & I've been telling people this since this period, people just don't like hearing it and they'd rather listen to the marketing.
Nothing could put me in the seat of a modern vehicle, even the driving experience & road manners are terrible! I own 7 vehicles and the newest one is an 89 Subaru Brumby ute, I still daily drive the first vehicle I ever bought, an 84 Subaru Brumby I purchased in 92.... Parts are still in production for older cars and in most cases the 80's Japanese vehicle manufacturers shared so many mechanical & electrical parts between different makes & models that they're not that different to putting a Lego set together.
For me it was the price of using mechanics for repairs that motivated me to take the four pairs of silk boxer shorts I got for Xmas when I was 19yo back to Target and I used their exchange policy to get myself a basic metric Sidchrome toolkit, small trolley jack & and a workshop manual for my vehicle model. Then I opened the manual, read it & got to work.
It was literally this simple but I really do find people are afraid of getting some grease under their fingernails, it's been this way for years...the reality is if you really want something done properly you're gonna have to do it yourself or deal with these rip off mechanics, electricians, builders and any other tradesman/woman that'll pick up on you're lack of knowledge and then rip you off... It's the way it works in this country and for the most part everybody's paying off each other's houses, car payments, rent & credit debts....I literally can't think of any profession that doesn't price gouge, tradesman or any others.
Older vehicles aren't difficult to keep on the road, in most cases the Japanese vehicles from the 70's & 80's teach the owner how to maintain a vehicle and this exactly how I learnt because I couldn't afford to pay mechanics in the early 90's Victorian recession... Thanks for building the casino Jeff!
6 of my 7 vehicles are on club registration and the cost of full comprehensive insurance with Shannon's is a $280 per year each, this includes my 1985 Pinzgauer 712k, Volvo tgb 13 both of these are 6x6 portal axle vehicles that have a 4.5t gvm but only weigh 2.1t, both these are registered as vans & the reg cost is the same as any 4wd or van.
I emissions test all of my own vehicles and when it comes to my three Subaru MY series utes, MY series sedan, MY series wagon, all have 1800cc engines & two of these have twin carburettors they all put out less emissions and are more efficient than my niece's 1300cc Honda Jazz... My Subaru's all achieve 8.4lts per 100km.
My 1985 Pinzgauer & 1979 Volvo converted to 3.0lt Mercedes diesel 6x6's both emissions test below any modern Toyota or Nissan whether diesel or petrol from the 90's onwards...140lts gets me 800 to 1100km depending on the terrain I'm driving on.
Spare parts for all these vehicles are still in production if you know how to look for them and the maintenance cost of a Pinzgauer 712 is 1/3 the cost of the GQ Nissan patrol I owned for a brief period.
It's sad to say but I'd much rather send my money overseas to buy parts for the maintenance of the vehicles I own than spend it here just to be ripped off.
It was the shared cross parts manufacturing across different makes & model that kept/still keeps older vehicles so easy to maintain and alive for decades but this isn't a good business model for automotive manufacturers... We used to hand the family car down to our children up until the 90's but how many vehicles will you have owned by the time your children are old enough to drive?
Go to any classic car show and you'll see that these old models are still going well because they were engineered to be rebuilt again and again... Proper machines instead of a people moving appliance to be disposed of once the cost of repairs outweighs the value of the vehicle. Something's wrong with this picture, if vehicles could be built to last decades ago in the 70's why can't it be done now if technology has advanced so much?
There's one born every minute is the answer and the think tanks behind strategic marketing know this.
The writing has been on the walls surrounding us all for decades.
The pick your own parts yards were full of these older cars & most were in excellent condition but recently they've quickly been getting emptied as the scrap prices rise because of what's coming next and the cost of vehicle maintenance will be the last thing for most people to worry about, the vast majority are far too busy & too distracted to give a rat's to take any notice...I understand the reality of the current world we all have to just bear with and I truly believe if people spent more time learning about our actual world history while staring into their devices and just discard the BS that's being taught at schools or what the media feeds us we just might all be a lot better off.
As this is automotive content start with looking up the Stanley Steamers, the Stanley Rocket and the Aussie, Vic, Pritchard steam engine from the late 80's that Ted Pritchard was scammed out of by Monsanto even though this is just the tip of the iceberg and the entire population becoming addicted to consume fossil fuels was something that was cleverly engineered.
I also realise that nobody will read this long YT comment because it'll take them 5 minutes, that's enough of my ranting for today.
