  My mother was living in Santa Barbara during this attack. &nbsp;She told me how everyone in Santa Barbara was terrified for a day or two that an invasion was imminent.

  Fun fact: part of L. Ron Hubbard’s ignominious naval career was commanding a submarine chaser off the coast of Oregon in 1942. One day he ordered his crew to fire depth charges and gun rounds at what he thought were Japanese submarines spotted on sonar. The Navy concluded he had actually fired at a “known magnetic deposit in the area.”

  I am of an age where I still remember what air raid sirens in the US sounded like. &nbsp;But there are still parts of the country where you can hear the sound. &nbsp;Sirens are still used for tornado warnings in the center of the country, and for tsunami warnings along the coasts. &nbsp;An eerie wail for sure! &nbsp;Thank you again for an excellent spisode, Dr. Felton!

  You have forgotten the attack in 16 March 1916 when Pancho Villa attacked Columbus New Mexico with 500 men. &nbsp;They attacked the US Armay and civilians killing 17 Americans.

  Central Omaha was bombed by a firebomb balloon attack with the bomb landing around 50th and Underwood Ave where a plaque now stands.

  My uncle was a Naval Reserve Chief Petty Officer. BY Dec. 10 he was on his way to Pearl Harbor to engage in the salvage operations. &nbsp;He very rarely talked about his experiences, but one thing he said stands out. &nbsp;&quot;We were lucky they caught our fleet in port. &nbsp;If there was a battle on the high seas, the loss of life would have been horrendous.&quot; &nbsp;The battleships were all between the age of 17 and 25 years old. With very limited air defense systems. &nbsp; He told me that some of the equipment he used &nbsp;during the salvage was made in 1888.
