Such a fine film yet I hope I never see it again. I went through three marriages destroyed by absurd jealousies that then escalated into actual infidelities. The last marriage produced a son whom I raised alone, almost as if I had prevailed in some way over these awful relationships. I had a child in whom I could vest my love and care. But he is an adult now and living his own life and I am alone with only my memories at last. In short, the pain in this film hit exceedingly close to home.

Some comment needs to be made about the magnificence of James Mason, one of those actors who always seemed to be playing himself and yet who simultaneously managed to produce a wide range of characterisations over the course of his career, from heroic to villainous to scheming to fusty. Here he is so bloated and oily as the cuckolded husband, a truly despicable figure who nevertheless manages to command at least a little sympathy at the end — and yet he's still somehow James Mason. A fantastic performance by an underrated actor.

Someone commented about the title. It related to the nursery rhyme I believe: Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater, had a wife and couldn't keep
her. Put her in a pumpkin shell and there he kept her, very well. I hope that helps!

This was such a good movie. Ann Bancroft had to command such a wide range of emotions for her character, and she did so beautifully.

Rather unusual to discover James Mason 53 minutes after the beginning of the film ...

Bancroft did the English accent beautifully for a person born in the Bronx.

An excellent movie that very much depicts the quiet desperation of its time.

Always loved this film. Everyone is brilliant. And we see a very young and very charismatic Maggie Smith.
