It‘s one of the signature songs of the 80s. If you listen to it you know how that decade felt.

I was born in 1966 so I feel so lucky to have grown up with 80's music and this song had everyone dancing. It was a decade of music full of dance and optimism. ❤

I am a 60-year-old professional musician living in Los Angeles. I grew up in England and attended London University back in 1985 when this song was released. Here is the skinny on Everybody wants to rule the world:

The song was written by Roland Orzabal, Ian Stanley and Chris Hughes. Chris Hughes produced the song. The band members are Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. The song was a huge international success (from the album "Songs from the "Big Chair") and did get to number 1 on the Billboard charts in June of 1985.

The song in a nutshell, is about how political leaders around the world all want more power. The context here is important: When I was in college during the mid-80s, the Cold War was still raging, and Russia's President Gorbachev's Perestroika and Glasnost were yet to develop into full blown out policies in the Soviet Union.

At the time Everybody Wants to Rule the World was written, nuclear war was still a real possibility around the world. Yes, we even had "drills" in college as to what to do if nuclear warheads were detonated towards Europe. Indeed, the original title for the song when Orzabal wrote it was "Everybody wants to go to War". They obviously changed it, because although it described what they wanted to say, it just did not sit right, as it sounded a little "too in your face".

The song speaks directly to how both superpowers have got it wrong - the capitalist west and the communist eastern bloc, in their struggle for power to outdo the other side and win the "world", they have created post-industrial misery and decay.

The ironic opening word of the song "welcome", ushers in this dystopian vision of the present: there is no turning back from such a world of surveillance and tyranny (where "they" will find you even when you are asleep: the Cold War was, in a sense, the first information war in which "intelligence", espionage, and watching both one's enemy and one's subjects became a "watchword", if you'll forgive the pun).

So that's deal. I was there and lived it. It's a great song, without question! Such a great anthem too! But yet it speaks directly to the social commentary and politics of the day (mid 80s) really well without insulting the listener or turning them off in any way. It just makes you listen.

Lastly, a big thank you to Gary Orzabal, Curt Smith, producer Chris Hughes and all the other musicians associated with this song (and other Tears for Fears records) that made this possible. Amazing!

Enjoy! Cheers, Sam.
