  Possibly the best naval gun ever made is the BL (breech loading) 15-inch Mk 1. An untested gun put onto a revolutionary type of ship (oil-fired fast battleship) that was reliable enough to serve for almost 40 years through 2 world wars. On the last battleship, Vanguard, the guns were guided by the Admiralty Fire Control Table Mk X, a unique analogue computer that could not just use radar to target, but to predict movements of an actively manoeuvring target, being able to differentiate a turn and a zigzag for example, and give the firer multiple solutions based on these predictions.

  Portuguese had breach loading guns as far back as the fifteen hundreds.<br>During the reign of King John II, the berço (cradle gun) was a type of light cannon mounted on a swivel pin (swivel support). It featured an opening at the rear of the trough (the breech-strap) where a pre-loaded movable powder chamber was fitted. The Portuguese Navy used multiple removable chambers for each gun, ensuring a remarkably high rate of fire for the period.<br>On the caravels and carracks of the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The English warship Mary Rose (1511) and the Portuguese flagship Santa Catarina do Monte Sinai (c. 1520) both carried these massive breech-loading guns on their lower decks.

  Very good but you missed simultaneous time on target gunfire where as many as 7 auto loaded rounds arrive at a target at the same instant.

  Do not forget however that there were ways on early british battleships to muzzle load them in a protected area. <br>The turret(s) would traverse to the under deck muzzle loading compartment and lower the barrel tips to a negative degree through a hatch, in the deck.<br>Where it would be loaded in a handling room under the deck plating.

  Now they have lasers on some destroyers, and at the Straight of Hermosa, that trend down a palette with a laser on it. It worked.

  The man who died on Constitution was an oddity. Mostly if there was a spark down a muzzle loading cannon you lost your ram rod and right hand.
