For every relegated team there's a promoted team.

Yes, if your team gets relegated you might never see them in the premier league again for the rest of your life, if you're unlucky. That's why fans are so afraid of relegation, nothing is guaranteed afterwards. Leicester city won the premier league 10 years ago, now they got relegated twice and are playing in the 3rd tier, no one knows if they'll ever make it back.

Relegation doesn’t just apply to English football, but applies to all football leagues across the planet. I’m Norwegian and my boyhood local team Eik Tønsberg got relegated back in the 1980’s (the Jahn Teigen years), never really recovered and does not exist today as a professional football club.

I live in Stavern on the south coast of Norway, however at the moment the best team in Norway is from a small northern town called Bodø and their team Bodø Glimt is not only dominating Norwegian football, but this small town of 50.000 people has also beaten European powerhouses like Manchester City, Atletico Madrid and Inter in the European Champions League. They were relegated as late as 2017, so a huge shout out to Bodø Glimt as they started this magical 2026 for Norwegian football.

It's a beautiful system. In every American sport, the last quarter of a season is only exciting for the top teams that are fighting to make the playroffs. In the Euro leagues with promotion/relegation, those teams at the bottom are fighting for their lives and play like hell to stay in their current league. With that, you get a match that is very exciting and has meaning even if it's a match between two bottom clubs.

10:41 bro there has been teams relegated from the prem from when it was started to be called prem 32 years ago. Also remember it goes 11 leagues down so you can be relegated from the prem into league 1 sell players balance books and then get relegated again into league 2 sell players at that level balance books then again into league 3 and spiral down 11 leagues. Take Wrexham for example after being relegated six leagues down Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought Wrexham invested in the team and helped them with promotion to where now they only one league below the premiership.

The most recent dramatic relegation story is that of Leicester city.
They won the premier league in 2016 then got relegated the first time but bounced back.
They got relegated from the Prem again 3 seasons ago and suffered back to back relegations last season to the 3rd level.
The levels of the pyramid is as follows
1. Premier league
2. EFL Championship
3. EFL League 1
4. EFL League 2
5. National league
6. National league (North/South)

10:58 Oldham athletic fell from the premier league all the way down to the 6th tier over 20 years, they’ve just had their first promotion to the 5th tier since getting relegated from the prem

After a 25-year wait, Coventry City earns promotion back to the Premier League. Just eight years after being in the fourth tier, the team has made a remarkable recovery.
1st tier: Premier League.
2nd tier: Championship.
3rd tier: League one.
4th tier: League two.

When was Coventry back in the Premier League?
Coventry purchased the CBS Arena in August 2025. On 17 April 2026, Coventry were promoted to the Premier League for the first time since the 2000–01 Season after a 1–1 draw with Blackburn Rovers. On 21 April 2026, Coventry defeated Portsmouth 5–1 to clinch the 2025–26 EFL Championship title.

I don't see relegation happening in the USA on the same level, simply because American sports leagues are built around centralized franchise systems. The league is the main organization, and the teams operate as franchises within it.
European football is structured very differently. Every club is an independent organization, basically its own business, and the leagues provide the framework for those clubs to compete. You can think of it as a government overseeing independent businesses operating in the same market. NFL teams are more like branches of the same corporation.
There was actually an attempt to create an American-style, largely closed European Super League in April 2021, where the richest clubs would compete in a competition with no real threat of relegation. The backlash was enormous. Fans protested outside their own clubs, threatened boycotts, and made it clear that they would not accept the idea. UEFA and national football authorities also threatened serious sporting sanctions, including expulsion from domestic, European, and international competitions.
The opposition wasn't simply because the idea was "American." European football has adopted plenty of American ideas. The problem was the closed league itself. Fans argued that clubs should earn their place through sporting results, that even the biggest clubs should be able to be relegated, and that the richest clubs shouldn't be able to guarantee themselves a permanent place at the top just because they were rich and famous.
Some of the biggest names in football, including Gary Neville, Jürgen Klopp, and Pep Guardiola, were also very vocal in opposing the idea.
The whole project collapsed within 48 hours of being announced. The European Super League didn't even make it to its first match.
