How do you feel about wedding culture? Worth it or a waste of money?

We have one daughter who got married 12 years ago. She had a beautiful wedding in church with a reception in a museum. The wedding costs all in were about $18,000. We had 200 guests and did not go crazy using the most expensive vendors. I made the centerpieces and ordered many items off of Etsy. The venue was a very special place to my daughter and SIL. We saved for it for many years and I'm happy we did it. I also love what you did and your ring is beautiful. To each his own. It's what makes the couple happy. It's your day.

I got married over 20 years ago but if I could go back in time, then I would have had a small wedding somewhere scenic where I live in Michigan with close family & friends only. Instead my husband & I did, the bigger wedding at a church & then reception at banquet hall with 120 guests. I personally don't think weddings are worth the money, time, energy & stress. My advice to engaged couples is to do what you want & not let others dictate your wedding. Go with what you can afford, never go into debt for your wedding.

My parents had a courthouse wedding, then a house party! I want something similar.

I did the Courthouse wedding in college and glad we did not go into debt for a wedding. I am in a long-term relationship. If we get married, I think I would like some kind of party, but I still would not want to spend $30,000 for a wedding. Something under $10,000.

Waste of money. So many couple go all in for the wedding, but put no thought into the marriage.

Mine only cost $500, married in my synagogue 12 years ago.

8:29 Hollywood Movies have made this the standard we shouldn’t be looking to Hollywood to set the standards and normalize extravagant expectations. I mean why would we take the reality of what Hollywood sets when these married couples don’t even last long being married and most have the money to spend it. It gets you thinking. Also some of us are practicing Christians who genuinely want to do right by God and not what the world normalizes.

Weddings are a ridiculous waste of money. They're all boring and they're all the same. It's not just a crazy expense for the couple but for all the guests as well. People should elope or have the smallest wedding possible. Save money and spend it on something like a house.
