  Wild side note, Lynchburg Virginia is actually named after a famous anti-racist activist, John Lynch, a Quaker who opposed slavery, proposed segregation, and all forms of racial oppression. Quaker’s are surprisingly woke throughout history. His brother….on the other hand…..yeah. They coined the term lynching after his brother, Charles, torturing and killing British loyalists without trial (most commonly via whipping). This was later applied to and more broadly associated with race based lynchings, as the origin of the term is killing a suspected criminal or other ‘guilty’ person via ‘mob justice’. This ‘guilt’ can be broken social contracts, expectations, roles etc not just laws. That’s how the violence was later turned against Black people. Two very different sides of the same family coin. But yeah the assumption that Lynchburg is like a sundown town should come from the location, not just the name. Kind of makes me feel bad for John, knowing he worked to free enslaved people just for his name to be associated with such a disgusting act.
