  The main reason for Peco's survival is that the company has remained independent and employs those enthusiastic and knowledgeable about railways

  The major contributor to my education outside my schooling in the 50&apos;s was without doubt provided by Hornby. It was my Meccano set where I learnt about structures, mechanic maths, gearing, you name it, and my Hornbydublo train set where I learnt about electrics. Not just learning the details of the topics but being enthused to pursue these fields when I became an adult.<br>With the skills I gained from Meccano and Hornbydublo I went on to do an apprenticeship in the 60&apos;s at the Royal Radar Establishment, Malvern which was concerned with electronics and physics developments. To facilitate mechanical structures for the investigations and prototype equipment, stores carried a range of Meccano parts. <br><br>So Meccano has served as much more than just a toy, providing education, but is also an exceptionally useful piece of kit facilitating research and development.

  After the announcement that Pecorama was not going to open in 2026, I started to worry. &nbsp;Now I hear Peco have made losses for the last few years. &nbsp;With Hornby selling off Scalectrix I fear for the hobby....

  I used to buy Railway Modeller every month. Bought many back-issues from Oxfam. Loved those magazines.

  Zinc-pest? I learned a lot from that segment. I thought it was rats getting into the shed and pissing on everything. Guess that gets the rats off-the-hook. 🐀

  PECOs main market is overseas. They build some excellent prototypical track and turnouts for the overseas market. &nbsp;We, mainly, just get the toy stuff. That&apos;s why they survived in my opinion.

  Dapol also manufactures a part of its model railway range in the small town of Chirk, north Wales.
