  I was born and grew up in Clacton and we used to go to Butlins for a holiday every year and thoroughly enjoyed it and of course the bonus was that it was only 45 minutes walk from our house 🤣

  2 small points - 1) Working people got 2 weeks off in the summer, not one. Normally a set factory/office closure. 2) The £50 allowance DID include the cost of the hotel if it was abroad. Holiday brochures would quote a &quot;V-Form&quot; amount, which was the amount the hotel would take out of your £50. The more expensive the hotel, the less the spending money. This alone sparked the building frenzy in Spain for big, cheap, basic hotels. <br>No hotel abroad had any frills. No shampoo, tissues or on some occasions, even soap 🤣 This lasted into the early 90s.

  From Jan 1942 till Mar 1943 I was a junior clerk at Barclays Bank, West Streatham.<br>Billy Butlin operated all his accounts at our branch, as did the business associate who introduced him to our branch manager, whose business was known as Laker Amusements.<br>Mr Butlin visited our branch about once every 4 months, for discussions with the manager.<br>Every time, he brought gifts for the staff. &nbsp; The manager and chief clerk each received a bottle of whisky, as did the chief cashier. &nbsp; All other staff were given a package of toilet rolls, which my mother greatly appreciated.
