People forget that only one member of the Fellowship was not nobility or its equivalent - Samwise Gamgee. And Samwise didn't dream of seeing the lofty White City of Gondor, nor wonder at the Argonath. He dreamed of strawberries and cream. The fact that in the end it was Sam who saved everything, by being there to carry Frodo's burden when Frodo no longer could, it shows what Tolkien valued the most - green, growing things.

Referring to Tolkien "He definitely understood the emotional power of a good hole" He was a WW1 vet. The trenches were the best place to be on the battlefield while simultaneously being the worst place to be on the surface of the Earth.

In an age of AI slop being pumped out like a factory billowing smoke into the sky. . . The phrase "The Hand Still Matters" hits remarkably hard.

I'm from an area known as The Black Country, which neighbors the west side of Birmingham, and was the inspiration for Mordor itself. We have a phase; 'Black by Day, Red by Night' as because of all the factories and steel works, black smoke would cover the sky, as well as everywhere; the land, buildings, even people being coated in soot, and when it did turn night all that could be seen for miles was red from all flames and forges working away.

Also we made the anchor for the Titanic, the only thing that's still doing it's job on the ship to this very day 😄

The Dwarves did not dwell in darkness. Their great halls were illuminated by thousands of torches, the lights from which was reflected in huge mirrors set into the walls. Khazad-dum (Moria) in it's heyday would have been shimmering with light.

The Scouring of the Shire is also Tolkien saying that no place, no home, or refuge is safe from the effects of war, which comes directly from his personal experience of coming home after the war.

The lasting architecture that the race of Men leaves behind is often seen in the backgrounds of the places the Grey Party travels through. All those giant statues of ancient kings and warriors, long forgotten.

Tolkien was a WW1 veteran. He was KEENLY aware of the value of a bunker. He had lived in the trenches so "wet slimy" wasn't just a description to him. It was a physical presence.

21:30 Moria was not always dark. Erebor was not always dark. We dwarves dug deep, yes, as is our nature, but our halls were meant to GLITTER and SHIMMER with cunning lightways lensed with a thousand types of gemstone, and thousands of lamps and candles! Think of the subtly grandiose light inside a great cathedral, with stained-glass and candelabrae. Darkness only returned when we were forced out!!!

Just a couple of notes:
1. Tolkien talked extensively to his friends about how his experiences at the end of the second industrial revolution and what modern machines did to war as he served in World War 1 were key parts of his world building and writing. It's not subtext, it's just the text. Middle earth is his love letter to and mourning of the old world before "black iron" tore it to the ground.

2. Men have an afterlife. They go to live directly with Eru Ilúvatar as pure souls if they are good, true, and pure of their status. Since the elves were made of middle earth, they are bound to it in spirit, so they to to the halls of Mandos in death and can eventually either go to Valinor or be reborn in Middle Earth and that cycle will continue until Eru Ilúvatar breaks the world and leads the second song of creation. Dwarves go to a special, separate part of the Halls of Mandos where they are not reborn, but they train for the day the will help Eru Ilúvatar and their creator, Aule, remake all of Arda. The "Gift of Man" isn't that they stop existing, it's that they die a true death and get to go to the spirit world immediately instead of after the remaking of the world. This whole system is inspired by Tolkien's Catholic faith, though it isn't allegory as Tolkien hated allegory.

A note in Hobbits, i feel like without articulating it like that, he made them the most human, since humans have the power of tradition and stuff but hobbits are pretty much like many of us, affraid and confortable, not meant for adventure, but capable of great things when something we love is on the line. That's why he made them builders, but not greedy. The ideal of man as a creator, but not slave to industry.
