M4 is like Battlefield 4, the release was a bit problematic but over the years it got better and despite new rifles/battlefield games came out people still talk fondly of it.

As a gunsmith, the army had to turn to the civilian firearms market in the 2000s and early 2010s and they realized that civilian shooters, particularly high round competition shooters, had encountered and solved almost all these issues years earlier and they had entire books worth of hacks, fixes, and aftermarket parts that solved the problems or improved performance and now it is normal practice for the army to shadow popular national shooting competitions like 3 gun and carbine matches to see what people are using, what issues they are facing, and how they can learn from it.

And to add to it. The carbine length gas is absolutely fine. Heres the thing. You can set the gas length at any distance, its arbitrary, because people have set it at every length. And we have all the numbers.

The reason Mid Length is an improvement over the carbine length for a 14.5 is it allows a smoother gas operation with an oversized gas port. And the army wants an oversized gas port because they want the gun to survive a dirty gas port and still fire. And on a carbine length, you really should have an adjustable gas block if you are going to run an oversized port. And the army doesnt like adjustable gas blocks.

You start the story in the middle. Eugene Stoner designed a rifle to make an intermediate caliber bullet effective in a military rifle. The Army changed the barrel length, bullet weight, twist rate and gas system length and said “it’s broken.” No kidding.

As the saying goes, “if it ain’t broke, fix it til it is.”

FYI guys the military arsenal ( OG Springfield Armory) sabotaged the hell out of the M16 because they wanted the M14 to stay as the main rifle. Stoner made a great gun

Shout out to all of us who never used our issued carbines on full-auto. Remember folks, no matter where you are or go, engineers make things look good on paper while we have to figure it out the hard way

The issue was that they wanted DMR performance out of an infantry rifle they could also substitute for a light machine gun with suppressive fire. The military has an obsession with making their infantry rifle smaller and lighter while simultaneously asking it to do impossible things.

It's a constant in military weapons, the M16, the M4 and the M7. When the weapon is new, it's likely bad

The entire Army should adopt a version of the URGI. Done.

I never knew how many problems the M4 platform had! I always figured it was just perfect for some reason, 10/10 video, very entertaining and informative :)
