  I remember the communist 80s. Was a teenager growing up in the closest /most loyal Soviet satellite Peoples Republic of Bulgaria. It was a drab, gloomy, stale, depressed world. We were kept behind an electric high voltage barb wire. Rations in electricity, water supply was rife. Food and basic necessities were just about enough as to not be qualified as humanitarian disaster. No personal freedoms or political deviation from the official Communist Party view. I vividly remember the DDR citizens travelling to the Black Sea coast the only one allowed to them ,in their tiny Trabants, Vartburgs and Ladas dressed in unappealing clothes and salivating whenever encountered the occasional and rare West German vehicle or product ...Soo Grateful the nightmare is over and it is NOT COMING BACK 😊

  Insane how East Germany was pretty much if Nazi Germany had stayed around but painted over with Communism. Even down to the youth organizations and the salute. 😳

  They recruited former gestapo members in West Germany so both sides had a ton of spying going on

  Stasi reported every night to Moscow. Stasi (and KGB visitors like one Vladolf Huilowych Putler) were keeping East Germans under Russian occupation. No more, no less. So naturally they spied against own people.

  East Germany was allowed to sell excess Oil from the USSR to foreign countries for hard currency which they used to buy goods; gave them the semblance of having a higher standard of living than the other countries of the East Bloc.

  The joke was after the fall of East Germany people wondered "What do we do with the Stasi?" the joke was "Make them cab drivers, you tell them your name and they already know where you live."

  I had a friend who was 15 years old or so when the USSR fell. She still remembers neighbors reporting other neighbors to the Police for political crimes. Much of the claims made up as a result of petty rivalries. She is now a successful businesswoman in America who is very grateful for being in her new country.
