  When I found this guy a couple of years ago he came across as an undergrad student sharing some interesting facts he came across in his studies, basic pop-sci stuff. Now whenever I stumble across one of his shorts it'll be something like "The rising trend of Omega Mecha Prime Tung Tung Tung Sahur Core Aesthetics has some deep implications for our language" and it comes across like he sincerely believes that the majority of the population has seen the same tik tok videos and knows exactly what he's talking about

  To put this into perspective, EtymologyNerd came to my university last semester because undergrad students voted for him to be our guest speaker. It was perhaps the most laughable &quot;academic&quot; presentation I have ever seen. All I and my friends (actual graduate linguistics students AND professor) could do was ridicule it. It was quite literally a series of vaguely related 2-minute tiktoks that he somewhat incoherently cobbled together. And of course, he explained no data or methodology and just started listing random claims, numbers, and things he had seen on the internet. It was like inviting a crackpot conspiracy theorist about flat earth to come and give a talk about geology... The dude is internet famous, not a linguist. It&apos;s lowkey stolen valor.
