Excellent review of my undergrad education! I'm older than you, so I was Chomskified -but I always love to look at new interpretations and understandings. The field has grown so much I feel like I'd need to go back and do that degree over again!

I think "You run that entire system flawlessly every time you open your mouth." is a rather optimistic assessment of my language ability.

I was Chomskified back in the 70s. That he may have been on the wrong track (I'm not qualified anymore to have a strong opinion) reminds me of something an anthropology prof said to our class back in the olden days. He said we smile and mock Bishop Usher for his estimation of the age of the Earth based on Old Testament data (generations and length of lives and all that). But, our prof said, at least he was trying to come up with an estimate based on the data he had. We now know he was wrong, but should we mock him? Same with Chomsky. He came up with a theory, and that really started the ball rolling on the question of how we do language. Tip o' the hat to Chomsky, despite reasons to consider him a bit of a putz in other ways.

Pragmatics reminded me of that Mitch Hedberg joke: "I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too."

"Phonemics Without Sounds" is a linguistic essay written by the American linguist Dr. J. Marvin Brown. Originally conceived as part of his work in historical Thai linguistics, it was later included in reprints of his influential academic dissertation, "From Ancient Thai to Modern Dialects".

The core of the publication is based on a drastic shift in perspective regarding how language and perception operate. The main thesis: Brown proposes separating phonemes (the abstract, structural units of language that distinguish meanings) from the physical sounds produced by the vocal tract. He argues that the essence of phonemics lies in the neurological and structural organization of the mind, rather than in the acoustic sound waves themselves.

The text served as the conceptual foundation for Brown鈥檚 studies on how the brain processes behavior and reality independently of words. This line of reasoning paved the way for his later collaboration with William T. Powers (the creator of Perpetual Control Theory).

While studying the transition from Old Thai to modern dialects (From Ancient Thai to Modern Dialects), Brown encountered a classic problem in historical linguistics: sounds change over the centuries, but the structure of oppositions that maintains the meaning of words often remains stable. Brown realized that focusing solely on "physical sounds" (phonetics) limited our understanding of how languages evolve. He proposed that what is actually preserved and transformed throughout a language鈥檚 history are abstract patterns in the minds of speakers. Sound is merely the external "packaging"; actual phonemics takes place in the brain, in a purely structural manner.
