“Dumb” is just an old term for being mute. Hence why those little elevators that take things to other floors in a building are called “dumb waiters”. They’re like silent waiters.

Literally one of my favorite movies of all time. Even though I obviously know how it ends, I've rewatched it many times because the cinematography, music score and acting are so atmospheric and beautiful.

The light allergy is a real thing. In the dvd/blu-ray they have a brief explanation of the disease.

46:42 Holy fish. I just remembered: One of the symptoms of Tuberculosis is that it drains the color from your skin and turns you very fair-skinned, even pale! Going pale and losing your body fat to the point of looking emaciated was why Tuberculosis was called "the Consumption" back in Victorian times! 😯

How many more hints and foreshadowings is this movie dropping on our heads without me even realizing it?

Taking photos of dead relatives posed was a common Victorian practice. 26:18

I think that's why Charles was so surprised when he got back home... he didn't expect to find his family dead.
