  It’s wild to see parents celebrate a 7 year old not being able to read as "true freedom." Throughout history, literacy was the exact thing kept from the poor, the servants, and the enslaved people specifically to keep them in servitude. Forcing/imposing/or subjecting illiteracy on a child isn't liberation, it’s stripping away the ultimate tool of independence.

  I was homeschooled and this &quot;unschool&quot; stuff is why I catch flak for having been homeschooled: people immediately make the presumption I simply wasn&apos;t educated.

  This kind of shit makes me so mad, because kids who are responsibly home schooled and way ahead of their public school peers, will end up taking more crap from the general public than they already do. Most people don&apos;t know the difference between home schooled and un-schooled.

  My theory is that these “unschooling parents” are really just controlling and abusive people who don’t want their children to ever be able to reach for anything for fear that they will succeed in life where the parents themselves failed

  That kid trying to write and asking 5+7 is really sad. &nbsp;He&apos;s trying to understand the world around him and fundamental knowledge and his parents are failing him

  Hey, teacher here. A few years back we had a family come in who had been unschooled. I only really knew the second youngest who was just starting kindergarten though she was 8. And she had an older sister who was 11. Absolutely LOVELY kids. They LOVED it. Like... thrilled at being in school and learning and seeing new things and their skills growing. Never complained a single time ever. The 8 year old couldn&apos;t really read at all when she came but by the time the year was out? She was reading at late 1st/early 2nd grade level. &nbsp;Like, one year from &quot;I know letters and their sounds&quot; to reading stories. <br><br>Both she and the oldest were at grade level by the second year in no small part because they REALLY wanted to learn. Like, eyes lighting up each time! I couldn&apos;t really talk about the situation with them because it wasn&apos;t my place as a teacher but... that custody change over was probably the best thing that could have happened to them.

  I remember when I was a kid, I would often stay up late with a flashlight in the book without any technology in sight. I probably got in trouble at least 10 times, but I just kept doing it because I love readiing. nowadays if you pull out a book in a public setting you&apos;re liable to get laughed out of the room or something, because almost no one else knows how to read.

  There’s nothing wrong with teaching your kids at their pace and interest. But having ZERO curriculum or discipline is a recipe for disaster
