That... and in the in game “sunken scrolls” explicitly says that the inklings evolved from modern day squids after humans went extinct from rising sea levels

Fun Fact: Some octopus have been able to successfully escape from aquariums on multiple occasions. They are very incredible In stealth as Mat says.
