  It was nice to know despite how much Richard is ridiculed for not being in England for most of his reign, he was an effective commander. And he had a good sense of British humour, laughing at the French king drowning and then taunting him by arriving to peace negotiations on a boat.<br>Edit: I was referring to the popular notion among historical accounts and media about Richard not caring about his English subjects and used them to fund pointless wars, which I think is anachronistic and even modern historians think it oversimplifies his character and situation.

  Richard did a brilliant job recapturing the territories Philip had seized in his absence and one can only wonder how much longer the Angevin realm would have endured had he lived longer and fathered an heir of his own.
