One of my ancestors was arrested in Salem but not tried. The trials were stopped in time. The people who died in jail are not remembered. It was an abomination.

To be honest, the Puritans were strict, radical protestant zealots, and their laws matched their beliefs. Religious leaders and magistrates worked hand-in-hand, making heresy and spiritual deviance equivalent to civil crimes like a theocracy. That is why they fled England in the 1630s, as they saw the Anglican Church as still too "Catholic," and they intended to "purify" it. Many Quakers were accused of witchcraft, who were residing in Massachusetts at the time, along with the Anglicans and Baptists. What better way to be rid of them than to accuse them?<br><br>The funny thing was, my family and many others came in 1670 to the new state of Maryland, just south of them, and were Catholic.
