  I knew Sanford casually for many years as a customer at his country store. You would have never guessed he was 75. He was in great shape and very physically active, he loved to hike and golf. He was as sharp as a tack mentally and had good common sense.. his disappearance is very puzzling

  I was the hiker that talked to Sanford on the trail and ID’d him when they showed us a picture. &nbsp;That was a strange event. &nbsp;It was definitely cold and wet and he was in shorts and and shirt. &nbsp;My theory is he made it to the point in the lake where the water flows out of it and probably tried to cross it and slipped and fell in, but that’s just my guess. &nbsp;We looked for him for a while and have looked for him each year we go up there

  I&apos;m a local and have hiked all over the Mount Jefferson Wilderness. I think some context has been overlooked. He went missing on June 26th, that is early hiking season in the Central Cascades of Oregon. Marion Lake trail is one of the first trails to become snow free in this area every summer, but higher elevations (not even much higher) would still be buried under feet of snow. Minto Pass climbs atleast 1200 ft in less than 5 miles where it joins the PCT. If he had stayed on Minto during this time of year he wouldn&apos;t have to travel far before he would find himself in feet of snow. Snow on the trail; when you are not prepared for it, increases the risk of both injury and hypothermia. Navigation also becomes more difficult as people lose the trail under the snow itself and can become lost more easily. If he had turned off on Bowerman Lake trail he likely still would have encountered snow. <br>Also while filming, if you had continued on Minto a little further you would have found the entire forest to be absolutely demolished for a long way due to massive wildfires that occured in 2020. Sadly if Sanford did die in this area I think its possible his remains, possessions, and any other material evidence would have been destroyed by the blaze.

  as a stubborn solo hiker who has hiked to many mountain lakes, my hunch would be that he attempted to hike around the lake. I&apos;ve done the same exact thing more than once, hike off trail to loop around a lake. I have encountered awful terrain doing this from steep elevations to swamps with mud of unknown depth. I&apos;ve had to cut through plant growth and I&apos;ve had to build passage over swamps with sticks and logs, and that was in my 20s-30s. if he ran into this situation in his 70s as it&apos;s getting dark and it&apos;s been raining, sounds like a major exhaustion followed by hypothermia recipe. like you say at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MByBUNwUhQ&amp;t=4308">1:11:48</a> &quot;nobody in their right mind would do this&quot;...but I&apos;ve done it, and not out of insanity, but stubbornness. it is often the case that stubborn individualistic healthy people go missing because they keep going when they shouldn&apos;t.

  People usually underestimate how far someone walked when they went missing. I think Mr. Rice will eventually be found quite a long ways outside the search area.

  I am an old man, age 70 with a lot of outdoor experience. I hike many miles, always alone as no one I know is interested, always carry a light but full pack for emergencies. can&apos;t imagine going out in shorts and carrying candy bars...

  I&apos;m 67 and in very good shape, but there&apos;s no way I&apos;m going on trails I&apos;ve never been down before without some kind of emergency beacon or some device that will get me located fairly quickly. I&apos;m surprised this gentleman didn&apos;t have such a device. I&apos;m sure at 75 years old he knew devices like this existed.
