  It&apos;s like this guy did everything he was supposed to. He signed in at the park, he told people where he would be, even drawing a map for his loved ones of where he would be. Just shows you there aren&apos;t any guarantees.

  Being an experienced outdoorsman does not make going missing more mysterious. The more experience they have, the more time they spend in the wilderness, and the areas they visit tend to be more remote and rugged. More time + more danger= more opportunity for something bad to happen

  I’m pretty sure it’s the most prosaic reason - losing your footing on loose rock, slipping at a bad angle, breaking an ankle and an arm…you’re cooked.

  The slapping sound u heard was likely from a grouse/partridge/relative taking off from the underbrush. Like pigeons, their wings clap together when they take flight after being startled.

  I was having a conversation with an older gentleman while we both waited for our cars at the service department of a car dealer. &nbsp;He told me he loved hiking by himself, but that he ONLY hiked off trail. &nbsp;He wanted to be where no one else had ever been. &nbsp;He has spent much of his life out in nature and it&apos;s his way of enjoying being out there. &nbsp;It immediately made me think of many of these cases. &nbsp;<br>Also, you mention hitting his head and dying as one in a million. &nbsp;I know an older woman who slipped, hit her head and died while hiking with her family. &nbsp;They also talk about just how rare it is for that to happen, but it is a possibility.
