Iwo Jima from the Japanese soldier's perspective is a story almost nobody tells: eight square miles of black volcanic rock, sixteen miles of tunnels, and twenty-one thousand men ordered to defend an island they knew they would never leave. This video puts you underground with the garrison. You arrive on an island with no fresh water, where rain is caught in cisterns and the air smells of sulfur. You dig through rock so hot the work is done in fifteen-minute shifts. You meet General Tadamichi Kuribayashi, the commander who had lived in America and came home convinced the old plan was suicide: no banzai charge, no defence at the water's edge, no dying for nothing. You live under seventy-four days of bombing. You hold your fire while the landing craft come in, and you wait for the beach to fill.
