And one consistent problem is doctors who don’t listen if you’re overweight!

I didn't think I should tell my "ignored by doctor" story, but having read the other comments, here goes: when I was 39 I had vaginal bleeding almost all the time, like weeks at a time and then maybe a small break. I went to several doctors who all were very rude and didn't take it seriously at all. I was told it was peri-menopause and given hormones. Eventually, on my 40th birthday I went to a new doctor ( a woman btw) who said "well we can't let this go on". long story short, turns out I had uterine cancer. and by the time I was diagnosed it was stage 4! I didn't fit the "at risk" profile, so nobody bothered to do any tests etc. my hemoglobin was down to 7 when I had a D & C (which I thought would at least make the bleeding stop) and that's how my cancer was finally diagnosed. But hey, I'm a 20+ year cancer survivor 😃

I went to the ER with extreme pelvic pain and a doctor did a quick external pelvic exam and told me I was probably just constipated and to go home and take pain relief they'd prescribe a laxative. Luckily a nurse requested I have an abdominal scan just to make sure and it turned out I had a cyst the size of an orange causing torsion of my fallopian tube and it had tucked down at the back of my pelvis which is why it wasn't felt with the external exam. I am so grateful to that nurse. I was booked in for emergency surgery where they needed to remove the whole ovary. It could have been so much more serious if I didn't have that nurse to take me seriously.

I have PCOS and was diagnosed when I was experiencing extreme abdominal pain. They found a multi chambered 4 cm cyst. Given how debilitating the pain was, I requested surgical intervention (which was an option, but wait and see was less risky). My ob/gyn was supportive, but the week leading up to my surgery, one of her staff tried to convince me it "wasn't that bad" and said that I can't turn to surgery for every little problem. I was in so much pain that I couldn't function for weeks, and insisted. They did a laparoscopic cyst removal and found my abdomen was FULL of endometriosis. <br><br>My insistence that I have surgery was the only reason that was caught and cauterized. <br><br>(The nurse who tried to convince me otherwise apologized and took accountability. I hope she did better by future patients)

My mother had terrible pelvic pain for over a year and the doctors kept insisting that at 43 she was menopausal and needed to accept she was aging. It turns out she had incredibly advanced endometriosis and when it ruptured she ended up in a hospital having an emergency hysterectomy and coding multiple times in the night. The doctors told her it was the most advanced case they'd ever seen in a living person. I was six years old and it still makes me so sad to think I was so close to losing my mother just because no one took her pain seriously. 😢

She started out with a physical exam in the beginning.

As a white guy in relatively good health, it is frustrating to see how much more seriously I'm taken by my doctors than my wife is by hers. Recently I asked about some minor heartburn to my PCP (minor to the point where I can just drink a glass of water to clear it) and was immediately given a prescription. Turns out my wife has the same prescription at the same dose, except she's been dealing with debilitating heartburn for years that has dramatically reduced the range of foods she can eat even with the high dose of medicine, and her GI doctor wants to step her down from it. It's crazy.

My periods started when I was ten. Almost immediately they were incredibly painful, I had very strong flow (I can't count the number of sheets I've ruined) and pain before periods and at ovulation. Severe PMDD. <br><br>My mom took me to the doctor at 11 for the first time. They wouldn't even send me to a obgyn. Said that I was just "sensitive to the pain" and implied to my mom that I was doing it for attention. <br><br><br>Next time I went I was 15. I was told "It's normal".<br><br>At 19 a friend's mom told me to ask about endometriosis. They said I was too young for it.<br><br>At 27 they finally did an ultrasound but didn't see anything so they said I just had painful periods, happens sometimes. They recommended a IUD which did help with the bleeding but not with the pain. <br><br>At At 32 I was finally diagnosed with endometriosis. I can't say for sure when it started since my periods have always been painful, but I can confidently say it had been 15 years before I got the diagnosis. 22 years of horrible pain before someone finally listened to me.

You answered a question that I posed on Instagram about heavy periods. When I went to a new gyn I told them that I had asked a gyn for general advise on social media and my heavy periods were affecting my life. They knew who you were and started a work up. I got a diagnosis and started a treatment plan that so far is working. Thank you for helping me to feel empowered and more confident in advocating for myself.

I want to add a bit of context here Dr.Jones . Dr. McKay was having a particularly rough day in the ER. She had spent most of her shift caring for an end-stage palliative cancer patient who came in with a fractured foot. The patient arrived with her husband, two young sons, her palliative care nurse, and her parents. In the end, all McKay could really do was manage her pain and explain that increasing the dosage would keep her as comfortable as possible, but would also likely hasten her death. The mother, her family, and McKay all agreed to that course of care, which felt like a somewhat unusual way for the show to depict medical assistance in dying. McKay, who has a young son of her own, clearly bonded with the family, and that case seemed to take a real emotional toll on her. I also think all of this was still weighing on her during the other interaction. So while she may have come across as lacking bedside manner in that moment, she was still clearly deeply invested in patient advocacy and fully showing up where it counted.

The preparing to be ignored at the doctors is such a painfully familiar feeling. Literally just got out of the hospital after being ignored the whole time and discharged with a hand wavey narcotic. <br>I love every doctor, nurse, and technician that actually listens when their patient is distressed
