Yea, aliens can travel faster than light speed, but they don't have a Google translate.

Practically anyone can setup an interesting mystery. It’s paying it off is where the skill comes in. Mysteries have to be reverse engineered. Know where you’re going before you setup the journey.

This whole movie could have been boiled down to an action-packed first act of a film. Then the main story should have been the impact of Disclosure Day...what happens next. How do governments, religions and the aliens react to humanity knowing the truth. Show riots and the US government cracking down on dissidents. Show armies retreating and stopping their wars. Show cults rising up to worship Blunt and O'Connor's characters and them having to be on the run from foreign governments trying to kidnap them and abuse their powers. Show hints of what the aliens end game is for engaging with humanity. That would have been a much more intriguing story.

I usually agree with you on most movies, and obviously I respect your professionalism in presenting your review, but I personally didn't enjoy it at all even though I came in with a positive approach, ready to be wowed but ultimately it just fell flat for me, the tension was over engineered and I didn't feel there was much stakes after the initial chase.

For me the movie felt like something Spielberg wanted to get to the ending with but didn’t care enough on how we got there. So many choices they made was just a waste of time with no purpose or consequence that could’ve been spent developing characters. Overall all of that made the film a miss

Colman spent the whole film building a house not to help Emily Blunt unlock her abilities or anything like that, but just to make her remember she was abducted. All that time could’ve been spent helping us understand his reasoning for what he did or even where he got the alien from.

The lay breadcrumbs about Emily wanting to become an anchor (asking her bf about her test footage, her producer telling her about being late won’t help her) then get to the end where she becomes an anchor only to have someone else go through the footage that is being leaked.

The film not doing enough to make us care about the fact they were on the brink of WW3 when that is something that is supposed to be important that the unveiling of the aliens is supposed to stop was another bad choice. I honestly didn’t even realize that until I heard it in a review.

Also, I’m sorry but every action scene even from the beginning of the movie being the bad guys have them captured only for them to slip away so easily was unforgivable with the worst being the end of the car chase hiding feet away and her escaping the motel room window. Also, having Josh character hide every detail to prevent the bad guys from knowing their location only to have a note in his hands was just terrible.

I left the movie theatre feeling like I was robbed of 2 hours. I've come to the conclusion that Speilberg part of the problem, with regard to the misinformation we face on the very subject of aliens, and those who are using their technology for their own good and not mankind. He takes responsibility away from the government and creates an agency acting unilaterally. It's complete BS! Emily Blunt deserves a goddamn oscar, though. She was absolutely amazing.

The script was really rough. And tonally all over the place -- they basically had a 3 stooges gag in the climax. I had no preconceived expectations of this movie and as I'm watching it, I'm thinking "This is kinda silly, but enjoyable." Then, "This has some marvel-esque dialogue and jokes, but it's fun." Then to "Oh, no, this is just really dumb."
My IMAX theater was openly laughing at a lot of the dialogue and plot points, none more than when they wake up from their dream about being abducted and Emily Blunt gives her best Anastasia Steele "Whoa"

I love how Coleman Domingo's character said about the alien stick "it's not a magic wand" and then in the third act it ended up functioning as a magic wand actually... 😂😂

The CGI on the alien looked about as good as the alien in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull from 2008 lol.

I just found the ending to be underwhelming and a bit confusing. First, they cold-drop a bunch of unedited video that in the real world, most people would just assume is AI. But the whole world instantly stops what they're doing to watch. Then... it's revealed that the group had an alien the whole time??? What do they even need all the videos for?

The biggest thing that stuck out to me which made the ending flat and not as strong as it could have been: the lack of more setup and thru line of atomic annihilation. From when they set it up at the beginning, I had the impression that atomic war was a vague possibility and not a very real imminent threat. I appreciate the scene of everyone buying at the gas station, but it would have been a lot better to have talks about the end of the world THROUGHOUT the movie. Because it seemed like an afterthought when it came up again at the very end. If it had a stronger presence throughout such as them escaping Wardex amid lines of cars getting out of Kansas City, seeing more things on the news about how atomic war is imminent, the characters discussing the state of humanity about to blow themselves up in relation to disclosing that ET is real, etc. then the end with the act of Disclosure and everyone stopping to look at the news, it would have been a LOT more impactful.

Here I was walking around all weekend thinking it was fairly well recieved. Folks in my showing were talking about it after, as we all walked out to the parking lot and seemed to enjoy it, from what I overheard.

I wasn't really planning on seeing it until I watched Dan's review and decided to give it a chance. I quite enjoyed it. So thanks again Dan, for talking me into watching something I might have ignored otherwise.
