One of my favorite d&d memories came from the 2 truths & a lie scene...

PC listens to the riddle and the following exchange takes place:

PC: so, i ask you 3 questions and 2 of your answers will true?
Hallister: Yes
PC: Did that count as my first question?
Hallister looks at the PC with one eye closed and the other looking him over: No
PC: How do we get to level 2?
Hallister: Use the stairs.

Hallister explodes into a cloud of shimmering glitter, which then snows gently to the ground.

The players had already found the stairs.

I've been playing in a weekly DotMM campaign for the last three years and we've been having a great time. we're only a few sessions from the end

This was/ is my first campaign to play in. We've almost finished it.
As a player, the brilliance is the variety between levels, not just in environments but also in goals.
My character doesn't see Halaster as a true villain but as a sacrifice who made himself the villain, to be hated, to build strong adventurers who will be ready for the coming cataclysm.

Absolutely agree, well done! DMed about 32 sessions with it. Might write a summary to share some time, and to relive the experience.

Really nice to see people passionate about the hobby and looking to boost stuff instead of tear it down. Been through parts of DotMM twice and dropped out because the DM had no interest in doing anything but a straight dungeon crawl and all the NPCs were instantly hostile. More people need to see this.

I ran DotMM fro 1st level to its conclusion and agree with your advice at the end of this video. By the end levels it was bloody-minded determination to finish the dungeon that kept us going. Trying to get the PCs, and by extension the players controlling them, to care about the personalities, plots and intrigues of the dungeon is/was impossible for my meagre skills as a DM.

If I was to guess what makes this adventure not fun is the DM asking every 2 seconds “what do you do?”. Players need to take initiative in all these rooms, or DM’s need to narrate what players do to keep it moving forward

The Neverwinter Nights expansion pack Hordes of the Underdark also features a whole chapter just on Undermountain, letting you explore through it and discover why Halaster has disappeared. Definitely worth playing

I've never read Mad Mage, but tbh, it sounds like it has the qualities I describe as being the best aspects of Dungeon Crawling there are. My one-sentence description of the point of dungeons is thus: "You are not exploring a physical space. You are exploring the mind of the villain."

It was Baldur's Gate 2 which taught me that idea, until I played it in like... 2001, I had never, not once, liked a dungeon in a TTRPG. Ever since, I have pursued its mastery of using a dungeon as a method to further character writing. Maybe I'll give this module a look.

I flipped the script on that one. My players actually started as monsters and where forced to start as janitors. The players then had a different motivation in uncovering the secrets and story behind it all.
