May I tell you a DnD Story?:

I bought the Campaign Book and somehow the Party managed to meet Halaster in the 23rd Level, the Lair of the Mad Mage.

Before that, they met him several times.
Either disguised, in Visions, as Projection or even in Person.

Sometimes he helped, sometimes he put Obstacles in their Way and his mood shifted every time they met him.

It was after the 7th time they met him, where the Group had a clear Goal, which was absolutely surprising to me and came very unexpectedly:

They took pity on him, wanted to free him and take him Outside of the Undermountain, so he hadn’t to suffer to his own Insanity any longer.

It took them several Sessions.
Many times their Characters got nearly killed or almost killed for good.
But they went on. Always thinking of that old Man, which was muttering to himself, laughing and crying, showing them otherworldly Horrors and beautiful Wonders of the Multiverse.

With each time Halaster met with the Group, I secretly used a Point-System for how he perceived the Characters and how much he started to like or dislike them.

During the Final Confrontation, Halaster did like them quite a lot. He didn’t fight them. Instead, he invited them to play a Series of simple Tavern Games like Baldur’s Bones, Devil‘s Seven, Emperor’s Card and Skull Bowling.

After each Game, I let them Roll to try to persuade him to go with them. And they succeeded.

They took him to the surface and thought they had rescued and healed him, as he was acting and speaking in a completely normal manner. Thanking them for their Deeds and rewarding them with a huge fortune and Magic Items.

But then it happened…
the Undermountain got completely unstable and many dangerous Creatures came to the surface.
Waterdeep’s Defenses started to crumble and even the Group was unable to stop all that Chaos from happening.

Halaster used his Magic to return all the Creatures and repair the damage they had been done, but he also told the Party that he would return into the Dungeon as well, because if he wouldn’t, the Tragedy would repeat itself until Waterdeep and soon the whole Continent was no more.
My Players were devastated and absolutely unhappy and sad, but they agreed.

And with this, my Players let their Characters retire.
It’s one of their greatest Memories of playing DnD.
Sometimes they ask me if it would be possible to do the whole thing again. But I still don’t know how…
I told them that they should leave it by that, but I am also curious of how Halaster would play as the Final Boss, he was intended to be.

Thank you everyone who actually read this Behemoth of Text with all it’s grammatical Issues and Typos. English is not my native language, it’s German. But regardless, I felt the need to tell this Story, because we had a dang good time with the Campaign.

May all your Games be awesome and become Memories which put smiles on your faces.

The only mage that even Elminster is afraid of. Not because of power level. It's just that Halaster is so absolutely insane that even the Mystra's chosen would prefer to never interact with him ìf possible.

The timing of this video synergizes well with the new Mr. Rhex video about the history of the forgotten realms. He mentions this guy and moves on afterward without discussing the dungeon.

Halaster is just that Day One player who's dominated the entire server, crafted every item, built and rebuilt several different bases and now he's gone insane waiting for the next DLC.

Our group has been running this adventure for a year now. Very fun. We are in the 3rd level...years to go.

I was hoping that someone would create this dungeon for BG3! I'm stoked and can't wait!

    Completed!
I won't give much detail at all from how it played out in our campaign, but I can review that the experience has been captivating at each level and offers such creative opportunities for DMs to play with. It is the big challenge and it is sad to hear how parties end up losing interest in it, that their game fizzles out.
It's not a campaign for everyone, but with the right people combined together, it can create many heartfelt moments.

This video is a fantastic breakdown. Long, but makes use of every second!

Awesome vid. Makes me miss playing back in the late 80s and early 90s. Ruins of undermountain was the second box I bought with my allowance. Still have it. Never got to play it or run it. Listening to this I wish I had. Thanks.
