I'm Thomas. I worked at Ford Engineering during that time. After taking a break at the Dearborn Inn I wandered into a nearby parking garage. There sat a gorgeous gun metal blue fastback Mustang in the shadows. Upon closer inspection, looking into the rear window...Oh my, a huge, transverse mounted V-8 motor.......I surmised an "executive toy". Obviously, now, one of the LID cars.
Thus closes one of the mysteries of my time at Ford Engineering.
There was also an unimpressive Pinto with a Cotsworth 4 cylinder racing engine.....far out, man.

The rear engine reminds me of the pandaira rear engine design

Putting 429’s in mustangs didn’t make sense unless Ford wanted a drag car platform. Dropping that motor in the production Torino to qualify for NASCAR would’ve made more sense.

The center of gravity on a mid engine is Superior ,and handling is at it's best

the heading is saying mid engine.. it was really a rear engine.. if they placed the motor were the back seat like were the front of the back seat ended to were the pulley's of the motor was ... they would have had a better outcome. also that transfer case most likely stole a lot of power from the setup.. just saying.. in any case. this was something i never knew was done.. thanks for posting this !!!

    THAT LOOKS HARD TO DO

The problem was the weight & height of that weight. A 351 placed between the frame rails & in front of the rear wheels with a trans axel & half shafts or directly to a solid rear end, top-down driven. The handling will be much better. 🤠
