The Dark Forest Theory suggests that the universe is a vast, silent space where intelligent civilizations exist but remain hidden, fearing each other.

Starfleet: FUCK YEAH FOREST! LET'S GO!!

I want a Trek episode in the vain of "The Chase" that explains why so many planets have a formation of rocks like the Vasquez Rocks (and why away teams are always beaming down to that location when they have a whole planet to choose from).

It's stated in TNG's Episode The Icarus Factor that Kyle Riker was the lone survivor of a Tholian attack on a recently constructed Starbase.

The ongoing conflict during the Lost Era was so prevalent that William Riker came up with a spatial strategy to exploit a very small Tholian sensor blind spot.

Cardinal directions in space within a galaxy: Coreward, Rimward, Spinward, Anti-spinward. You'd also need something for the remaining axis, but nothing succinct comes to mind.

Because of how VAST space is, I actually can imagine places near Earth and Vulcan going unexplored and not being truly mapped out a thousand years from now. Meanwhile, we're exploring and colonizing the edge of the Galaxy because we have the tech. If, IRL,we discovered Star Trek style FTL within the next century or two, it's fairly likely that we'll reach set foot on worlds a thousand lighyears away before we finish cataloging the Oort cloud, or even the Kuiper Belt, for that matter.

Now I want a UFP explorer ship on a 5 year mission to explore the Local Bubble that the Solar System is currently flying through. They get to come home every night to be with their families. Probably an episode of Lower Decks or something. Give the vessel some epic explorer name, like "Farseeker", "Ulysses", "Marco Polo", or something.

I'm surprised Cheron wasn't mentioned as their inhabitants were depicted as coming from the "southern" part of the galaxy.

I remember way back when TNG first aired the showrunners claimed that by TNG season one the galaxy was thirteen percent explored. It wasn't clear if they were just talking about Starfleet or all known powers.

Given all the wormhole-like things Voyager saw in the Delta Quadrant (the Malon spatial vortex, the Devore intermittent cyclical vortex, Underspace...), not to mention the Xindi subspace vortices that the NX-01 found pretty close to Earth, my headcanon is that the Federation has mapped a whole bunch of similar shortcuts within their own territory. They don't talk about it because it's routine for them - it's just their equivalent of taking the highway. That's how Kirk was able to visit both the galaxy's edge and its core within a few years of each other.

Or, y'know, he just went up. That works too.

The fancannon project Edge of Midnight- or maybe it was In the Raptors Claws- had an idea for reaching long-distance destinations at faster than lore speeds, like the NX-01 getting to Qo'noS in a few days . I forget the exact terminology, but it was like the gulf/jet streams for subspace. When in one of these 'currents', a ship may cover greater distance without reaching higher warp speeds. If they are also not permanent/fixed phenomena, and both shift about the galaxy and change in intensity, it could be used to explain older stories of reaching amazing distances- like TOS at the galactic edge- with it not being a regular thing because the 'current' shifted afterward and couldn't' be used again. And within more explored space, the currents are better charted, and used to speed up travel times when available.

It is nice to see an outline as the series and many maps don't really do it justice how much has been explored or give you good data.
