"The village fears the forest and the forest suffers the village. The Ranger loves them both and answers to the balance between them." Perfect.

When I was a kid, Ranger was my favorite class. <br>This was with Advanced D&D.

This is by far the best description of the Ranger I have seen. Really love how you are approaching the archetypes with a mix of history, mythology and psychology

Pointing to mythic archetypes is worthy of energy, effort and thought. Well done.

Ashitaka from “Princess Mononoke” is the pinnacle example of a ranger.

I think you 100% nailed the meaning, role and philosophy of the ranger class, but when you mentioned Drizzt and Aragorn having trouble fitting into the ranger archetype in D&D, 5e/5.5e most definitely yes, they don't fit at all, even 3.0 they have trouble totally fitting into, however, If you go back to AD&D 1e/2e when rangers didn't get any magical abilities until 8th level, they both fit pretty perfect in the non-magical levels of ranger, all the outdoorsy stuff, great in combat, the only class that was better at combat was the fighter (Rangers were equals to Paladins in combat at the time), Drizzt especially fits the 2e ranger who also gets stealth bonuses and is the only character class that can dual wield with no penalties out of the gate

My baseline for rangers is the Ranger’s Apprentice series by John Flanagan, which would be a Fighter/Rogue multi-class, Fighter for the extra attacks, Rogue for the proficiencies. They’d have the Athlete and Sharpshooter feats, with the Scout Rogue subclass and the Battlemaster Fighter subclass, 9 levels for Rogue, 11 for Fighter

What a wonderful definition of a Ranger. If you sang you would be the ultimate bard.□

No, Aragorn is not the last of the Dúnedain. He is the last Chieftain of the Dúnedain of the North and the final direct royal heir of Isildur, but a whole people of Dúnedain—including his fellow Rangers and the citizens of Gondor—survived and lived on after him.

Appreciate this as it is my job title, thank you for the thoughtful synopsis.

Brilliant work! Reminded me why I love Rangers so much, both the class and the archetype.

Really helped me understand why I most often play a ranger. It fits my own life. Love this
