Did Saruman Really Make a Ring of Power?

Did Saruman really forge a Ring of Power, or was the ring on his finger only a symbol of pride? We follow Tolkien's clues through Orthanc, the Great Rings, Sauron, Celebrimbor, Gandalf, and Saruman's claim to be “Ring-maker.” This warm, story-led Tolkien deep dive separates what the text confirms from interpretation and speculation. The evidence points toward a real but limited experiment—a lesser ring born from centuries of study—rather than another One Ring or anything equal to the Three. Along the way, we explore why Saruman studied the Enemy's craft, what Gandalf actually witnessed, what the mysterious ring probably did not do, and why Tolkien may have left its powers unnamed. Source note: the discussion draws chiefly on The Fellowship of the Ring*, with relevant context from *Unfinished Tales and Tolkien's wider account of the Rings of Power.
