I remember the WWI vets at the local Legion when I was a kid. Even 50 years later, those poor souls would jump at even a hand clap. Whenever any of them were there, everyone tried to be as quiet as possible. I can't begin to imagine the hell that they experienced.

'The Hills Have Eyes' meets '1917' would be a hell of a horror movie.

After the widespread cannibalism in Stalingrad in WWII, the Soviets reports on the subject described two types of desperate people. The "flesh-eaters" who laid low and scavenged the already dead (usually women feeding their starving children) and the "person-eaters" who murdered and ate raw anyone weaker than them (sometimes in crazed packs like rabid animals.) My personal opinion is that most zombie fears are shared human memories of these "person-eaters" throughout our history.

These is one of the less known and most creepy stories of WW1.

Gangs of deserters hiding out in no man's land & raiding trenches for supplies is something that happened & stories conflating them to monsters would have served to further dehumanize them so that soldiers wouldn't have any qualms about killing them or using those stories to justify doing so. General Sherman did say that war is hell & World War I is almost always depicted as being especially brutal.

My Great Grandfather was a Doughboy. My mom was the first girl in his family in seven generations. So he was, uncharacteristically, candid with her. Not completely, but she got more out of him than other family. His biggest fear was, his feet rotting off. The trenches and therefore his feet were constantly wet.

I read a old book about this in high school.
The allied forces isolated "abandoned" mines and tunnels beneath the trenches and gassed them after the war was over.
But some people got out... and survived on pure animal cunning until they were hunted down by specialist forces.
It scared the Hell out of me.

The chilling thing about the note reading "Nothing Doing" is that it was basically slang for "nothing to report". So if it was left by the wildmen it was kind them saying "If you think you saw us, no you didn't"

As someone who has seen pictures and clips of shell shock victims from WWI. I not only believe the idea of "wild men" but I'm actually surprised this wasn't a major issue, given how both sides like to "go over the top". Hell if memory serves me right there's a photo of that one guy who was in the trench smiling. His troop did not know his name nor where he came from. Yet, all they knew was that he survived several charges that left the rest dead. How many times dose that really neeed to happen before your concept of humanity breaks?

Oh I love Rich’s posh officer accent. He’s doing a great job in this episode!

Honestly, considering the sheer level of psychological trauma inflicted on the millions of people lining those trenches, I would be a lot more surprised if this phenomenon didn't happen. The idea of some people just mentally breaking and going feral seems almost to be expected in those circumstances.

Broken men turned from soldiers to terrified animals all because they couldn't take more of the price of a mile during the "Great War"
