1972 my senior year in high school , I drove a 70 Z28 with a 4.10 posi. It made beautiful doughnuts in the high school parking lot. 54 years latter, and 38000 on the odo it still makes beautful doughnuts.

Leonardo da Vinci is credited with inventing the open diff. While they were building the Duomo in Florence, Italy, Leo couldnt get to his workshop because all 4 paths were blocked by carts with broken straight axles carrying large loads. When they went around a corner on those really tight paths, they would snap an axle. When he finally was able to get in his workshop-he invented the open diff to solve the cart problem. When you go to his workshop/museum-its mind boggling what that guy invented that we are still using today.

I have a sticker that says " happiness is a tight posi"  also you left out the famous " Lincoln locker " anyone with an arc Welder could do!

In 1957, Chrysler used the Dana 60 locker rear axle to stop the "problem". You put it in neutral, set the parking brake, shifted into reverse, backed-up four or five feet (you felt and heard a "clunk") and now both rear wheels were "locked" together. The "locker" rear axle was "invented" by Ransom Elias Olds for his REO Trucks in about 1910. The WWI "Liberty Trucks" all had them to drive thru mud. Actually, Olds "de-engineered" the Panhard differential, invented in France circa 1883. Louis Panhard also invented the first working automatic transmission too and the "synchromesh"  manual tranny, both before 1900.

Growing up in Chicago, everybody wanted limited slip differentials to help driving in snow.

"Posi" certainly makes a good "sideways slide" possible, too much fun! "You cant buy happiness, but you CAN buy Horsepower."

Chevrolet did not invent the limited slip differential.  They just invented a catchy name for it...

My 66 El Camino had an open differential when I bought it. That was a surprise because it has the original matching numbers 396 big block. When I had the rear axle rebuilt I selected an Eaton Detroit True Trac clutchless differential that transfers torque via the interaction between worm gears and conventional gears. It requires no special friction modifier, and does not require the routine maintenance of clutch type limited slip differentials. It operates smoothly and silently. It’s a great choice for anyone upgrading to limited slip. And unlike in the video, it was about 20% less expensive than a clutch type differential.

I have a 1979 E150 Ford van I ordered it with a 300ci six, four on the floor transmission and a positrac/traction lock 9" rear end. When the fiction modifiers wear out it definitely chatters around corners. 47years later in original condition it still leaves two stripes when I punch the built 460ci it has in it now.

Packard engineered the "Twin Traction" differential in the 1950's. My 1957 Studebaker supercharged Golden Hawk has Twin Traction.
