A lot of people don't know this, but the actor who plays Tong Po ( Michael Qissi) grew up with Van Damme and came to Hollywood with him. When Van Damme was ready to give up on Hollywood to return to Belgium, Qissi was the one who encouraged him not to and it payed off.

After injuring my back, I went to an orthopedic surgeon who ordered x-rays. The damage to my spine at "T-10" as in the movie resulted in a referral to a neurosurgeon. He ordered a myelogram. Contrast dye is injected into your spinal cord to enhance the imaging. Upon receipt of the report, the neurosurgeon called to tell me that my spinal cord was 80% compressed. He scheduled surgery. I had a 1 wk. vacation scheduled in Puerto Vallarta, Mx. & the 1st available date for surgery was the following wk. He told me not to fall or do anything that would hurt my back or I'd be a paraplegic. The surgery was a success. That was 1993. Since then I've had to have surgery for additional spinal injuries. I developed a tolerance for opioids so I don't take any pain meds as they have no effect. In June, the V.A. authorized a spinal cord stimulator implant surgery. Now I spend an hr. every Sat. recharging the battery implanted in my lower back. I guess i was lucky, I'm still walking.
