Unlike Japan or Germany after World War II, no one helped Vietnam recover after the war. As a result, it took the country 30 years to rebuild to where it is today. My family fled Vietnam as "boat people" in 1979, four years after the war ended. I still remember the food rationing during those years—there was no rice. Until recently, even my mother believed Vietnam was still one of the poorest countries in the world, which it truly was after the war. Like your mother, she thought there was no toothpaste. Given its history, Vietnam has done remarkably well for itself and its people, even as a communist country.

We did a fact-finding trip last year (from Canada). Everyone was telling us "you won't like it; it's not like here." Well, we LOVED it for just that reason. I'm tired of cold winters and overpriced produce. My early pension will bring in $24K/yr (Cdn) at 58, then at 60 CPP will kick in and we'll be laughing. I have a small digital print side business that will bring in a bit of income and I have a small RRSP that we can draw from until 60. Don't live in fear; get out there and see the world!🥰

I went to VN with a budget of $10k for family of 4 to travel South to North. I ended up spending $2500 even though I spend pretty lavishly

I think this is one of the realest interviews I have seen about movig to Vietnam. Totally gives a balanced view about life in Vietnam. Too bad prices are going up like crazy in Da Nang too because of all the nomads and expaxts

The fact that Thailand got steamrolled leaves Vietnam as the last truly cheap place to be. Sadly, in 3-4 years all of these people will no longer be able to afford it after the gentrification runs amuck. We went through it in Mexico, Costa Rica and Portugal.

I just got back from Danang and I would agree - $2K/month would be the sweet spot to enjoy life there.

Great video and information!  My Vietnamese wife and I are planning to retire early in 8 years and we really want to live in Da Nang, Vietnam. We're planning to make a month long trip there a few years before retirement, so we are very excited.  I love Vietnamese cuisine so I'm excited to eat the local food.

I spend 6 month in DN last year. I want to go back. Compared to sharing a place in Toronto, having my own apt felt amazing. I hope one day I make the move and go there for good. But I would go with a bigger budget, 2k+ for spending plus 2k for savings.

Nice to connect with fellow Canadians.  The world is a big beautiful place. See it with your own eyes. We've been living out of our suitcases for over 4 years now in 44 countries and I wouldn't want it any other way.

It's difficult for 99% of foreigners to live permanently in Vietnam without a significant investment, Mai is lucky cause shes of Vietnamese ancestry, so it's easy for her to get a special Visa. For MOST foreigners, doing 90 day visa runs is not feasible.
