In this lesson, I’m playing four holes of what I call “Old Man Golf” to show you how just three simple, low-risk shots can get you around the golf course without bringing big numbers into play. The goal is simple: keep the ball in play, keep it low, avoid trouble and never make worse than bogey. I’ll show you the little bunt driver that doesn’t require a lot of speed, the low L-to-L iron and hybrid shot you can use to advance the ball without trying to get it high in the air, and a simple bump-and-run around the green that takes the chunk, blade and high-spin shot out of play. And these aren’t short, easy holes. We start on a 527-yard par 5 and play four legitimate golf holes while deliberately avoiding the shots most golfers think they’re supposed to hit. You’ll see some good shots, some bad shots and even a chunked fairway wood that still leaves me in perfectly good position. That’s the whole point. You don’t have to hit great golf shots to play good golf. There are no extra points for how high you hit it, how pretty your swing looks or how far you hit your driver.
