  You gave the reason in the first two minutes why a player shouldn’t compare themselves against anyone else. I don’t even know why clubs have numbers on them anymore. The new number should just be the loft. As someone else commented. My six iron might very well be someone else’s seven iron. Buy whatever clubs feel good and learn your distances. At 59 years old I no longer worry about keeping up with my 23 year old son. I don’t care if I need an eight iron to reach the green when he only needs a wedge. The older you get the less ego should factor into anything.

  This is a talented golfer hitting square on the face.   Any club will do well in his hands.  The benefit of GI irons is for people who hit all over the face and especially hit low on the face.   You lose less distance on mishits with GI irons.  So it’s not about how much you gain with GI’s but how much less you loose.   That benefit can offset the downsides described here.

  How far I hit my 7i all depends on the day. &nbsp;I play i210s so the 7i is 33 degrees. &nbsp;Some days my 7i has a carry in the high 150s yards, up to a max of about 163 yards. &nbsp;Other days I am 10 yards shorter.<br><br>The difference is entirely down to me and, at my age, how stiff my body is or is not

  I hit my 7 iron 150 to 165 depending on the day and how my body feels. Game improvement 29°, 71 yrs old. Ball usually goes high and stops good depending on the green.

  What’s the loft? That’s the number that should be on a club, not a ‘7’.

  I hit my 7 iron 125-130 yards of carry (70 mph swing speed). &nbsp;I play a game improvement irons (XXIO 12’s). &nbsp; ⛳️

  Excellent video, Andy. You have been promoting this idea of loft vs distance for players irons vs game-improvement irons for a while now and I think that you are definitely on to something. However, there is another factor to consider, which is forgiveness. <br>The &quot;technology&quot; that goes into game-improvement irons to shift the CoG and to launch the ball higher for a given loft, is also used to significantly increase the size of the &quot;sweet spot&quot; compared to the players irons. The idea is to increase the shot consistency (distance and line) with the game-improvement irons for those who do not strike the ball so consistently. <br>I believe that you actually strike the ball quite consistently close to the sweet spot and therefore don&apos;t need this advantage that game-improvement irons bring. Other golfers do need the improved forgiveness from game-improvement irons - I believe that this aspect also needs to be considered.<br>I was fitted for new clubs 3 years ago and ended up in the Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal range, which had five options with the following 7-iron lofts: Tour = 34dg, Forged = 30dg, Pro = 28.5dg, Standard = 28.5dg and High Launch = 31dg. I ended up with the smaller (but not smallest) headed Pro range and had all lofts increased by 2dg (i.e. to 30.5dg for my 7-iron). Overall, I think that Mizuno has clearly been wrestling with the apparent loft vs distance conundrum for different types of players for some time.<br>To answer your original question, my 7-iron distance is about 135 metres these days, which is about 148 yards (down from my younger days of 154 yards with a 34dg or so loft) with a current swing speed of about 80 mph for my 7-iron.

  had &quot;upgraded&quot; to some Taylor Made irons in 2014, played them for 12 years and my game was what it was (12 ish handicap index). &nbsp; this season I went back to an old set of Pings that I had purchased in 2000. &nbsp; Don&apos;t hit them quite as far, but my game has improved by a couple of strokes. &nbsp;Just way more predictable and consistent. &nbsp; &nbsp;Playing today as good as I was in 2002. &nbsp; (in my 60s now). &nbsp; &nbsp;Based on that, &nbsp;I tossed my 19 degree hybrid and have put back an old Ping wooden 5 wood from the late 80s. &nbsp; &nbsp;Used to hit it 220, but today I can only hit it about 195, but I can hit it 195 every time, and it drops out of the air like a dead duck and lands the same way. &nbsp; &nbsp;I am very happy hitting my Ping 8 iron 130 and having it stop on a dime as opposed to hitting my Taylor Made 9 iron the same average distance and never knowing if it was going to spin or scamper. &nbsp; Had gotten my index all the way down below 6 with the Pings about 15 years ago, and thinking that I may once again come close to that. &nbsp; I am back to using an older G5 driver too. &nbsp; If I had spent all the money I have spent trying to buy a game with clubs at the 19th hole instead, I would have had a heck of a lot more fun I guess. ...maybe not my liver...but that is another story.

  I’ve found that forged cavity irons 7 iron down gives more feel and precision while from there up the bag i use a hybrid which replaced the 6 iron and 9 wood, 7 wood, 5 wood. Im a 10 handicap and was a 15 before implementing this concept. You get the best of both, feel and precision in lower irons, distance and forgiveness in higher end of bag.
